Hardcover. Condizione: New. Until this book was published birdwatchers visiting the Middle East and North Africa had been frustrated by the lack of a comprehensive field guide to these bird-rich regions. This excellent guide - illustrated with exquisite accuracy and clarity by Ian Willis and with a thorough, well-researched text by three highly respected ornithologists - brought sighs of relief from Agadir to Bahrain! rnThis book is intended as a companion to guides which primarily cover the birds of Europe, notably A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe by Peterson, Mountfort and Hollom. It includes all known breeding, wintering, migratory and accidental species in the region. Of over 700 species covered 350 are illustrated in 40 color plates, focusing on the birds not illustrated in Europe/North Africa guides. Where appropriate, there are several paintings of a specise to show plumage differences of sex, age, race and season. In addition there are over 100 line drawings as aids to identification in the text. rnThe species accounts treat identification with special thoroughness and there are also sections for voice, habitat and status, plus two-color distribution maps. rnCovers: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mauritania, Oman, Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.

Pp184. 176 b/w photographs of raptors in flight, illustrations by Ian Willis. Black boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight bumped, edges browned, spine quite faded. Good-plus in stained adhesive plastic covered and price-clipped dust-wrapper. "The identification of the diurnal birds of prey is especially difficult. There is wide variation in plumage among some species, especially the eagles and buzzards, and in all species general outlines and wing positions are much affected by the prevailing conditions, by wind and light, and by the bird's behaviour at the time. Often, too, the birds are only sighted at long range, and the authors believe that when travelling extensively in Europe even the expert cannot hope to identify more than seventy percent of the raptors seen." This book arranges the 38 European raptor species into seven groups according to morphology, and describes what members of each have in common, and what they don't. "For this second edition the text has been revised, with more detailed revisions to the 'Buzzards', Aquila and Accipiter sections. Some drawings have also been revised by the artist in the light of recent knowledge, and there are 42 new photographs." .

FROM THE DUST JACKET FLAP: Leo Tolstoys tempestuous family life makes a tragic and fascinating story -- one, however.in which most of the blame has been traditionally apportioned to his wife Sophia. This first complete English translation of her diaries casts matters in a startling new light. Sophia Andreevna Tolstoya began to keep a diary at the age of eighteen, shortly after her marriage, and continued until just a month before her death in 1919 at the age of seventy-five. Her diaries give a detailed and illuminating account of the daily events of the Tolstoys family life-the births, marriages, illnesses and love affairs of her thirteen children, numerous grandchildren and countless relatives and servants. They chronicle the comings and goings of the Tolstoyan disciples who frequented their houses in Yasnaya Polyana and Moscow, and the friendships and quarrels with some of nineteenth-century Russia's best-known and loved poets, writers, musicians, politicians and revolutionaries.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. For this third edition, the typematter has been reset throughout to accommodate the many revisions and additions to the text. The identification drawings, too, have been reviewed and lan Willis has amended or redrawn elements of most of the Figures and has provided several additional drawings. There are 70 new photographs in the section of plates which has now been increased to 96 pages with a total of 248 photographs. The identification of the diurnal birds of prey is especially difficult. There is wide variation in plumage among some species, especially the eagles and buzzards, and in all species general outlines and wing positions are much affected by the prevailing conditions, by wind and light, and by the bird's behaviour at the time. Often, too, the birds are only sighted at long range, and the authors believe that when travelling extensively in Europe even the expert cannot hope to identify more than seventy per cent of the raptors seen. In the book, the 38 European species have been grouped into seven sections. Each section brings together those species with similar field characters between which confusion can so often, and so easily, arise. Each group has an introductory comparative text and drawings, and the species within the groups are then treated individually. The text, succinct and detailed as it is, is greatly enhanced by lan Willis's fine drawings, and there are 248 photographs especially chosen to illustrate aspects of identification. The book has a final section summarising the legal status of birds of prey in European countries. Jacket drawings are by Ian Willis. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
