"From June 25 to November 14, 2011, an exceptional exhibition of the Egyptian collection from the Calvet Museum (Avignon Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology) will be presented in the newly renovated 18th-century galleries. The museum will thus celebrate its bicentenary. "Splendid Egypt" follows "Egypt and Provence," presented twenty-five years ago, which revealed the treasures of the Calvet Museum's reserves and enjoyed great public acclaim. The Egyptian works will be presented in various sections: fauna and flora, religion and major cultural sites, the cult of the dead, institutions, the spread of Egyptian cults in the Roman world during the imperial period, Coptic Egypt and Muslim Egypt, and Egyptomania: the French fascination with Egypt in the 18th and 19th centuries. Hundreds of pieces will be on display: statuettes of Egyptian gods, cult objects, sarcophagi, the very rare Roman-era child mummy, fragments of wall paintings, papyrus, engravings, tableware, a specimen of a sacred Nile crocodile, a collection of Coptic textiles, and pieces of metalwork. This exhibition will celebrate the two centuries of existence of the Calvet Museum, founded on April 9, 1811.
