The front pastedown carries the library stamp of NCACNational Coalition Against Censorshipfrom whom the book was acquired and a bookplate stating, "Donated by Joseph and Shirley Wershba 2007." Joseph Wersh…ba (19202011) was a longtime CBS journalist and correspondent. Includes the original printed press release and a "With compliments" card, stating "Per your request," from the publisher. First printing. xiii + 305 pages. "In February 1979, four nuclear physicistswere quietly approached by the editors of a magazine called the Progressive and asked to give a technical review of an extraordinary article. It was titled 'The H-Bomb Secret,' and it contained the outline of an H-bomb design culled by its author, journalist Howard Morland, from unclassified material," begins the official press release for Born Secret (1981). The US government moved to prevent the publication of the article under the dictates of the Atomic Energy Act, specifically that all nuclear activities were "classified at birth." The ensuing legal case was the first to test the Act, and this book examines the profound tensions between First Amendment rights and national security and government secrecy. Written by the four physicists who consulted on the article and testified for the defense, Born Secret is an engaging and well-thought out read, especially for students of government and journalism. .
