Aggiungi al carrelloA Paris : Chez Méquignon l'aîné, 1785, 8°, (4), XX, 48 pp., fine wrappers. First Edition of the French translation by Claude-François Duchanoy (1742-1827) of the "Remarks on that kind of palsy of the lower limb, which is frequently found to accompany a curvature of the spine" (1779) that probably established the eponym on the continent in spite of David's paper of 1779. Even Charcot referred to it as Pott's Disease. "Pott's disease". Percival Pott (1714-1788), surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital for more than 40 years, left a classic description of spinal curvature due to tuberculous caries and causing paralysis of the lower limbs. He did not, however, recognize its tuberculous nature. Pott published a further book on the subject in 1782. Garrison & Morton No. 4304 (English ed.). Not in Blake, BL, Wellcome.…

Aggiungi al carrelloLondon : C. Hitch & L. Hawes, 1758, 8°, VII, (1), 84 pp., Wrappers, Uncut; Ex Libris Eugene S. Flamm. First Edition! In the Preface, Pott urges attention to details of the disease so that cases thought to be incurable are only so because of surgeons' mismanagement, "the operative part of surgery is far from being the whole of it". Comments on "surgical dexterity" .quickness as compared to speed of a jockey. Protection of the patient is a more important quality in a surgeon than speed. This work went through 5 editions, more than any other by Pott. "The first edition of Pott's observation on lacrimal fistula, which was long considered to be the definitive on the subject. The Observations went through numerous English editions, and was translated into German in 1771. It described the anatomy of the parts, and with "regard to the treatment three varieties of the disease: (1) simple dilatation of the sacculus and obstruction of the nasal duct, without inflammation; (2) inflammation, abscess or ulceration of the same parts with purulent discharge; and (3) obliteration of the natural duct, attended sometimes with caries of the bone" James, p.113 Percival Pott "was one of the busiest and most famous surgeon in England during the middle of the eighteenth century" (Heisrs 928). He was a general surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital from 1744 for almost a half century, and was described by many as a surgical genius. His oeuvre consists of several epoch-making masterpieces, such as his treatise on hernia, head injuries, spinal caries ("Pott's disease"), and hydrocele. On the other hand - according to Hirschberg - Pott "had a deleterious influence on the development of ophthalmology, because he defended the couching against the cataract extraction". (§393) Norman 1731; NLM p. 360; Hunter p. 296; Liverpool p. 413; Albert 1842; Becker 305.1; Waller 1775-5th edition only; not in Wellcome IV; NYAM; Wilmer 286.…

"This book, which showed Pott's extensive knowledge of surgical literature, systematized the treatment of head injuries. It shows what a variety of injuries of the head could be sustained even before the advent of the motor-car. Includes the first description of "Pott's puffy tumor". Pott was born in Threadneedle Street, where the Bank of England now stands; he succeeded Cheselden as the greatest surgeon of his day. The book was altered and re-published under a different title in 1768." Garrison & Morton It contains a bibliography of works on head injuries which appears only in this German Edition which was prepared by the translator, Christoph Gottlieb Murr (1733-1811). This precedes Haller and Vigiliis and is perhaps the earliest bibliography of neurosurgery. The only earlier bibliography is Gesner's Chirurgia, 1555. Aggiungi al carrelloLondon : Printed for Havers, W. Clarke, and R. Collins, 1775, Gr.4°, (8), 802 pp., 12 full-page engravings, full calf, period style; fine coppy. First and only Quarto Edition! With Bookplate "Ex Libris Eugene Somer Flamm": Hieroglyphic in oval cartouche surrounded by Latin text: vivitur ingenio caetera mortis erunt. Final blank present, so too the half title, but the blanks bound in with some copies (between the parts, e.g. after 328 and 626) are absent. The text is of course continuous despite pagination and complete. The first edition of his 'Chirurgical Works' in 1771 in 8° had missing some of his very important papers, as the 'Cancer Scroti'. Sir Percivall Pott (1713-1788) surgeon at St. Batholomew's Hospital in London from 1749 until his voluntary retirement in 1787; he was also member of the Royal Society since 1764; a surgical genius who revolutionized the treatment of arthritis, of diseases of the vertebral column (Pott's disease), of the hydrocele, of hernias, of fistules of the lactima system and of the rectum (Pott's knife) and of skull injuries." Hirschberg §393 b Content: 1.: Observations on the Nature and Consequences of those Injuries to which the Head is liable from External Violence. "This book, which showed Pott's extensive knowledge of surgical literature, systematized the treatment of head injuries. It shows what a variety of injuries of the head could be sustained even before the advent of the motor-car. Includes the first description of "Pott's puffy tumor". Pott was bom in Threadneedle Street, where the Bank of England now stands; he succeeded Cheselden as the greatest surgeon of his day. The book was altered and re-published under a different title in 1768." Garrison & Morton No. 4850.5 (1st. Ed. 1760) "Percivall Pott was one of the leading surgeons in London in the 18th century. He is remembered through eponyms of Pott's puffy tumor, Pott's fracture, and Pott's disease. A review of his writings and those of his contemporaries indicates that these surgeons were aware of the importance of changes in level of consciousness after head injury. The recognition and significance of the lucid interval was described and understood as a neurosurgical sign in the 18th century. Because of Pott's pre-eminence in the surgery of his time through his writings and lectures, he should be considered one of the founders of neurosurgery as a separate surgical discipline." Eugene S. Flamm: Percivall Pott: an 18th century neurosurgeon. Journal of Neurosurgery, 76/2 (Feb 1992), pp.319-326. 2.: Observations on that Disorders of the Eye, commonly called Fistula Lachrymalis. "Pott's observations on lacrimal fistula, which was long considered to be the definitive on the subject. The Observations went through numerous editions, and was translated into German in 1771. It describes the anatomy of the parts, and with "regards to the treatment of lachrymal obstructions lays down three varieties of the disease: (1) Simple dilatation of the sacculus and obstruction on the nasal duct .; (2) Inflammation, abscess, or ulceration of the same parts .; (3) Obliteration of the natural duct , attended sometimes with caries of the bone" " Bernard Becker Collection No. 305.1 (1st. Ed. 1758). 3.: A Treatise on the Hydrocele, or watery Rupture, and other Diseases of the Testicle, its Coats and Vessels. "Classic description of hydrocele." Garrison & Morton No. 4164 (1st.Ed. 1762). 4.: An Account of the Method of obtaining a perfect or radical Cure of Hydrocele by means of a Seton. 5.: Of the Fistula in Ano. "Probably the greatest English classic of colon-rectal surgery. Pott recommended the practice of simple division rather than the newer, more complicated methods proposed by Cheselden and Le Dran, and audaciously pointed out that there were lessons regular practitioners might learn from quacks apropos of this subject." Erste deutsche Ausgabe "Practical remarks on the hydrocele or watry rupture". GM Percival Pott of London (1714-1788)" served on the staff of St. Bartholomew's Hospital from 1744 until 1787 shortly before his death. He wrote a number of important monographs during this period, among which was "Some Few General Remarks on Fractures and Dislocation." In this book appeared the first definitive description of fracture about the ankle. It is memorable in that it describes a variety of fracture forms previously merely referred to as a single injury. Equally important, though still not always adequately appreciated, it discussed the importance of coincidental injuries to the soft tissues about the ankle and the tarsus, the proper care of which so greatly influences recovery. This group of fractures and soft tissue injuries still preserves the eponym of Pott's fracture, actually a generic term rather than the definition of a single fracture. Bond with: An Account of a particular Kind of Rupture, Frequently attendant upon New-Born Children ; And sometime met with In Adults ; Viz. That in which the Intestine, or Omentum, is found in the same Cavity, and in contact with the Testicle. The Second Edition. London, Printed for L. Hawes, W. Clarke, and R. Collins, 1765, 8°, (2), 41, (1) pp. The second of 1763 is the only edition that contains the priority dispute withn William Hunter. Hernias are classified as inguinal, femoral, umbilical, congenital and strangulated. Pott gives the first description of congenital hernia. Remains of the bookplate and inscription on front pastedown. In the 'Account' we find description of cases of hernia where the intestine occupies the same cavity as the testicle. Percival Pott (1714-1788), "one of the most prominent surgeons and teachers of surgery in London during the third quarter of the eighteenth century, published the first description of congenital hernia in this survey of the varieties of hernia and their treatment. He always wrote in clear, natural English, directly from his own experience, and recorded that he had "two intentions" in writing about ruptures: "To lay before the young practitioner a plain practical account of the three most frequent species of ruptures, and from my own experience to remove the prejudice against the profession with regard to this disease which the repeated assertions of advertising quacks have raised." He called the trusses provided by such quacks "melancholy proofs of ignorance." Noting the advances that surgery had made in the previous years, he suggested that the time had come for the public to trust surgeons to deal adequately with ruptures. In this book, he classified hernias not by site but by condition: "Those suitable for immediate reduction, those irreducible from their size, ancient date or adhesions, those reducible but the reduction difficult and attended with pain and trouble, and those reducible only by surgical operations." Although he described his methods in cases in which surgery was practical, he dismissed the possibility of "a radical cure" and criticized the use of cautery or caustic as "fallacious, uncertain, and therefore disused by good surgeons." Pott revised his book on hernias three times for later editions." Notable Medical Books. Percivall Pott's (1714-1788) "Classic description of hydrocele", was one of the most important book on the subject since the sixteenth century. "Pott's sequel to his "Treatise on rupture' contains the classic description of hydrocele and discusses other types of scrotal swellin and tumour. This last section of this work deals with sarcocele, from which Samuel Johnson suffered in his last years and for which Pott treated him shortly before his dead." Aggiungi al carrelloThe Second Edition, Improved with very considerable Additions. - London: Printed for L. Hawes, W. Clarke, and R. Collins, 1767, 8°, (4), N-VII, (5), 327, (1) pp., 2 engraved plates, emtemp. calf. Percivall Pott's (1714-1788) "Classic description of hydrocele", was one of the most important book on the subject since the sixteenth century. "Only the second edition contains the argument of priority with Hunter. Pott's Treatise of the affection was first published in 1762, the second with additions in 1767. The cause of the affection is clearly defined, due credit is given to Professor Monro and to Samuel Sharp for their work upon that subject, and a rational line of treatment is laid down. A dissertation upon sarcocele, then a mysterious affection, is followed by numerous cases. 'He was the first surgeon of his day, and a scientific writer, remarkable for the classic purity of his style, the scrupulous precision of his definitions, and the unerring closeness of his argument. Pott appears to have done for surgery what Glanville did for science: he introduced a wholesome scepticism. He always professed the utmost respect for the early writers on the art of surgery, and read their voluminous works with diligence; yet in his practice he relied entirely upon his own observations, and was guided by the common sense. In this way he broke through the trammels of authority, and may be regarded as the earliest surgeon of the modern type." "Ein heute ebenfalls relativ problemloser Eingriff ist die operative Behandlung der Hydrozele. Man hat im Laufe der Jahrhunderte verschiedene Möglichkeiten ausprobiert. Hayes, 1783, 8°, VIII, 504; IV, 532; IV, 481, (1), (32) pp., 18 Kupferstichtafeln, 3 contemp. calf; rebacked. First complete Edition with the works on Pott's disease, and the last edition published in Pott's lifetime. The collected editions (1779, 1783,1790) have a fourth plate included in the work on head injuries, an elevator and trephine, which does not appear in the separate editions. Fine copy with the ExLibris of John Hooper and Eugene S. Flamm. Contents: Vol. I: a) Observations on the Nature and Consequences of those injuries to which the Head is liable from external Violence. The book was altered and re-published under a different title in 1768." GM 4850.5 (1st. Ed. 1760) b) Observations on the Disorder of the Corner of the Eye, commonly called Fistula Lachrymalis. c) General Remarks on Fractures and Dislocations. "The methods outlined by Pott in his classic work on fractures and dislocations were eventually adopted all over the world. He described (pp. 57-64) "Pott's fracture" in this book, and he stressed the necessity for the immediate setting of a fracture and the need for relaxation of the muscles in order that the setting should be carried out successfully. " GM 4408 (1st. Ed. 1767) Vol. II: a) A Treatise on Ruptures. "Pott was surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Through a fall in the street he was confined to bed for many days, and during that period wrote his classic book on hernia. He refuted many of the old theories concerning its causation and methods of treatment based on these theories. The book includes the first description of congenital hernia." GM 3576 (1st. Ed. 1756) b) A Treatise on the Hydrocele, or watry Rupture, and other Diseases of the Testicle, its Coats and Vessels. "Classic description of hydrocele". GM 4164 (1st. Ed. 1762) Vol. III: a) An Account of the Method of obtaining a perfect or radical Cure of the Hydrocele, by Means of a Seton. b) Of the Fistula in Ano. "Probably the greatest English classic of colon-rectal surgery. Pott recommended the practice of simple division rather than the newer, more complicated methods proposed by Cheselden and Le Dran, and audaciously pointed out that there were lessons regular practitioners might learn from quacks apropos of this subject." GM 3424.2 (1st. Ed. 1765) c) Remarks on the Cataract. Remarks on the Polyos of the Nose. Cancer Scroti. "Includes the first description of occupational cancer. By describing chimney sweeps" cancer of the scrotum, Pott was the first to trace the origin of a type of cancer to a specific external cause. The above work also includes his description of senile gangrene, sometimes referred to as "Pott's gangrene". GM 2122, 2609, 4165 (1st. Ed. 1775) e) Observations and Cases relative to Ruptures, &c. f) Observations on the Mortifications of the Toes and Feet. g) Remarks on the Necessity and Propriety of Amputation in certain Cases, and under certain Circumstances. h) Remarks on the Palsy of the Lower Limbs. &c. Further Remarks on the useless State of the lower Limbs, in consequence of a Curvature of the Spine. "Pott's disease". Percival Pott, surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital for more than 40 years, left a classic description of spinal curvature due to tuberculous caries and causing paralysis of the lower limbs. He did not, however, recognize its tuberculous nature. Pott published a further book on the subject in 1782. " GM .…

Signed by Levi Barthlett (1763-1828) and John Thomas !**) "This book, which showed Pott's extensive knowledge of surgical literature, systematized the treatment of head injuries. It shows what a variety of injuries of the head could be sustained even before the advent of the motor-car. Includes the first description of "Pott's puffy tumour". Pott was born in Threadneedle Street, where the Bank of England now stands; he succeeded Cheselden as the greatest surgeon of his day. The book was altered and re-published under a different title in 1768." G&M "I have previously suggested that Percivall Pott (1713-1788), the English surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital from 1736 until 1787, may be considered a central figure in the transition of neurosurgery from a part of general surgery to a specialized discipline in its own right. *) This is based on his writings about head injuries as well as spinal disorders. In addition to discussing his own extensive clinical experience, he was well aware of the contemporary French literature. Finally, Pott's works were widely translated into German and French, thus greatly extending their influence across the continent. Just where Pott first encountered these new views on head injuries cannot be determined. Through the English translations of the books of Le Dran or from the English edition of the Memoirs of the Royal Academy of Surgery Pott may have become aware of this important observation. The clarity of Le Dran's ideas about the distinction between concussion and compression are representative of the French school of surgery, which undoubtedly influenced Pott's views on head injuries. '. the first symptoms which appear after a violent blow upon the head, are the effects of the concussion of the brain, and do not proceed from a fracture of the skull; whereas those which do not appear till some hours or days after the accident, (supposing there were not any other symptoms at first, or if there were, and they had disappeared) these second symptoms, I say, are produced by the extravasation between the dura mater and the fractured cranium, or by an extravasation in the brain.' It may be proper to add here, that in a very considerable fracture, the drowsiness proceeding from the extravasation upon the dura mater follows so close upon the first symptoms arising from the concussion, that they are confounded together. In Le Dran's work, the technique of excising the scalp to accommodate the trephine was illustrated with comments by William Cheselden (1688-1752). It was this technique that Pott recommended in his works on head injury some years later. Cheselden was the outstanding English surgeon of the first half of the 18th century and the first to organize anatomical lectures in London. Although he did not publish any general work of surgery, he was highly regarded as a lithotomist and anatomist. His involvement with formation of the new Company of Surgeons, his friendship with Le Dran, and the publication of the English edition of this important surgical work indicate his involvement with the significant developments in surgery of his period. Pott was a major proponent of an aggressive approach to the management of head injuries. He credited Le Dran for calling attention to the lucid interval that occurs prior to the onset of coma due to cerebral compression from an epidural collection. The preface to the 1760 edition, not reprinted in the 1768 edition, sheds considerable light on Pott's deeper understanding of surgery and the role of a "neurosurgeon." Speaking of wounds of the head, he notes that they are: '. accompanied with more uncertainty, creates more anxiety to the surgeon, and more hazard to the patient, than almost any other ill, to which the human frame is liable from external violence.' It was apparent .…
