Board Book. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 9 1/2" tall board book. Wear to boards. Writing on front board. Bumping with light fraying along edges and corners of boards. Rubbing and dirtiness to back board. Given the age of the book, I would say the boards are in good condition. "W503" printed on front board. Separation along the inside seam and front and back pages. Could probably be glued fairly easily. Pages are tight; clean/unmarked. Age toning/browning to pages. Blue and orange illustrations throughout. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. The front cover is in very good condition with a rubbing on the two corners, top and bottom. The back cover has some real light writing on it and the corners show a little bit more and you can see the board under the burgundy cover. The spine is in very good condition. The pages are tight with no tears. Some writing on the front inside cover and some crayon on the opposite page. Otherwise the pages are clean. During the Great Depression era, Whitman Publishing drastically optimized its manufacturing to keep books affordable. For this pocket-sized layout, they stripped out the costly multi-color interior printing process, using a simplified layout. The Materials: They paired basic, uncolored interior text with the most durable materials they had on hand—heavy burgundy cardboard covers and a reinforced gray cloth spine strip. The Purpose: These all-black-ink variations were typically sold for a dime or a nickel in regional five-and-dime department stores (like Woolworth's), serving as accessible reading copies for children.Because the typography and the cover boards are direct pieces of the 1928 Whitman copyright run, this specific book was manufactured right at the turn of the decade.
