Although offering no spectacular novelties, they presented, in clear la…nguage, a survey of the state of the various branches of physics and of recent developments in them." Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Fachbuchautor ging Pouillet indes auch experimentelle und innovative Wege. Er beobachtete z.B. als erster Temperaturveränderungen beim Eindringen von Flüssigkeiten in enge Capillaren (1822), Elektrizität im leutenden Teil einer Gasflamme (1827), konstruierte 1836 einen Luftpyrometer (Ausdehnung und Kompressibilität von Gasen), eine Invention, die 1840 von Regnault aufgegriffen und verbessert wurde, entwickelte ein Jahr später das Galvanometer zu einem wirklichen Meßapparat, indem er die Tangenten- und Sinusbussole erfindet und weißt mit seinen Messungen das Ohm'sche Gesetz nach und erfand schließlich 1837 einen 'Pyrheliometer' um die von der Sonne ausgestrahlte Wärmeenergie zu messen (Darmstaedter 348 ff.). En 1825, il invente la boussole des tangentes pour pouvoir mesurer des courants puissant. Entre 1837 et 1838, il réalise grâce à l'invention du pyrhéliomètre les premières mesures quantitatives de la chaleur émise par le soleil. Ses principaux travaux portent sur la compressibilité des gaz et surtout sur les lois expérimentales relatives à l'intensité du courant électrique dans un circuit fermé. Il a su également préciser la notion de résistance électrique et montrer que les générateurs sont composés d'une force électromotrice pure et d'une résistance intérieure. On lui doit la loi de Pouillet, déduite de manière expérimentale.
