Das Buch zeigt Defizite in der Historiographie zur Integration des Themas ,Kultur" in die Psychologie auf und strebt an, einige davon zu beheben. Es wird festgestellt, dass die Kulturpsychologie oft als Produkt der Moderne betrachtet wird, ohne erkennba…re Konturen in fruheren Epochen. Dies hangt mit dem Selbstverstandnis der modernen Psychologie zusammen, die als naturwissenschaftlich orientierte Disziplin gilt, die erst im 19. Jahrhundert entstand. Die reservierte Haltung der Psychologiehistoriker gegenuber der Vergangenheit ist daher wenig uberraschend. Die Grunde fur diese Defizite sind vielfaltig: von einer unzureichenden Aufarbeitung klassischer Quellen der europaischen Geistesgeschichte uber ethnozentrische Bewertungen vergangener Leistungen bis hin zu unzureichender Beachtung aussereuropaischer, insbesondere indigener psychologischer Beitrage. Der Autor ist sich bewusst, dass er nicht alle Defizite beseitigen kann, mochte jedoch die Aufarbeitung relevanter Quellen fordern. Er erkennt an, dass auch er ethnozentrischen Wertungen unterliegen konnte, und mochte auf deren Einfluss in bisherigen Darstellungen hinweisen. Zudem konzentriert er sich vorwiegend auf europaische Beitrage, zielt jedoch darauf ab, durch die Identifizierung und Rehabilitierung alter theoretischer und methodischer Konzepte zur Rekonstruktion von Ansatzen ausserhalb Europas und vor der ,Europaisierung" der Wissenschaften zu ermutigen.
