This volume provides perspectives of scholars from India and West Asia on several bilateral issues of concern, challenges and scope for further cooperation. The authors contend that a convergence of interests between India and West Asian countries across numerous domains, coupled with India's escalating stakes in the region, and the growing recognition among West Asian nations of India's burgeoning economic and political influence, stand as key drivers underpinning the India-West Asia relationship. Furthermore, they have underscored that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India s West Asia policy has undergone a major transformation.

India considers the West Asian region as its 'extended neighbourhood.' Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014, India's West Asia policy has received renewed attention, marking a notable transformation in its foreign policy approach towards the countries of the region. In recent years, engagement between India and the West Asian region has moved beyond the traditionally dominant spheres of trade, energy and diaspora ties. India has emphasised cooperation in the fields of defence and security, building strategic partnerships and is exploring new areas of cooperation in sectors such as renewable energy, health, climate change, food security, connectivity and so on. Prime Minister Modi's 'Think West' policy has further prioritised engagement with the West Asian countries. This book provides scholarly perspectives on Modi's policy and approach towards the West Asian region. The authors reflect on different dimensions of the IndiaWest Asia relationship, examine the key changes in India's approach under the Modi government and explore the opportunities and prospects of cooperation in the new and emerging fields. The authors aver that Prime Minister Modi's continuous engagement with the regional leaders at bilateral and multilateral levels, the convergence of interests between India and the West Asian countries, India's increasing stakes in the region and a changing perception of India in the minds of regional leaders are some of the key drivers of the fast-growing IndiaWest Asia relationship.

Since the outbreak of the Arab unrest, sectarian politics has become more pronounced throughout the West Asian region which is reflected in the growing polarisation of society and politics on narrow sectarian lines. Rulers have adopted sectarian approaches as a measure to secure their regimes. Opposition forces have also united themselves on the basis of their sectarian affiliations. This book focuses on three countries Bahrain, Yemen and Syria, where protests have taken place during the Arab uprisings and who have witnessed widespread violence and political instability. The role of two major regional powers such as Iran and Saudi Arabia has been extremely critical in all these three countries. Both Iran and Saudi Arabia have used sectarianism as a foreign policy tool to pursue their interests in the region. They have been found to be involved in a `proxy war` in these countries by the way of supporting either the regime or the opposition forces. Similarly the involvement of the two extra-regional powers, the US and Russia, especially in Syria has proven to be crucial for the security and geopolitics of the region. Sectarian faultlines has been widening since the outbreak of the unrest and has affected the political and security situation in West Asia. (jacket).

The West Asian region is undergoing a phase of massive turbulence since the outbreak of the Arab Spring. This period has been marked by popular protests, internal conflicts, civil wars, military interventions and involvement of external players. The regional security situation remains fragile with a new terrorist entity, the Islamic State, emerging to challenge the existing geographical boundaries of the region. There has been an enormous increase in terrorism and extremism, and the non-state actors have gained significant influence in regional politics. Sectarian conflicts in the region have manifested in places such as Iraq, Yemen and Syria. As the region is a major oil supplier for the Asian economies, continuing unrest has created concern among the major Asian oil importers over the possibility of disruption of oil supply to them. This book contains in-depth analyses of the shifting geopolitical trends unfolding in West Asia. Critical issues such as geopolitics, regional security, sectarianism, extremism, energy security and India`s relationship with the region have been discussed by the scholars in this edited volume. In light of the evolving geopolitical and security situation in the region, this book presents opinions and analyses of scholars from different parts of the world on the evolving political, security and strategic dimensions of the turmoil in West Asia.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a pivotal regional organisation in West Asia that has played a significant role in shaping the region`s political, security and economic landscape since its inception. Over the decades, the member states have made considerable strides in fostering economic integration and developmental cooperation. The GCC has demonstrated collective resolve in navigating key regional security challenges, including the IranIraq War, the IraqKuwait War, as well as recent conflicts such as the IsraelHamas War and the IsraelIran confrontation. Despite this cooperation, internal divisions persist due to divergent national interests, contrasting threat perceptions, differing alliances with regional powers and varied approaches towards the non-state actors. These differences culminated in the 2017 Qatar crisis, when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a diplomatic and economic blockade on Qatar. Although the dispute was formally resolved at the AlUla Summit in January 2021, the episode exposed underlying fractures within the organisation and raised questions about its cohesion and long-term relevance. In addition, protracted instability in the neighbourhood such as Iran's regional posture and the civil war in Syria and Yemen continues to pose challenges to the GCC. Bilateral tensions, particularly the SaudiQatar relationship, the varied stances of member states towards Iran, and their differing positions on groups like Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, further complicate intra-GCC dynamics. While the United States remains the most influential external actor in the Gulf, maintaining strong bilateral ties with all GCC member states, these countries have also expanded their engagements with other important countries such as Russia, China and India. Against this backdrop, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the GCC's evolution, its response to regional conflicts, intra-organisational tensions, the Qatar crisis and its strategic relationships with key external powers in the region.
