Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. WELLS, Charles."An Essay on Dew, etc. Essai sur la rosee et sur divers phenomenes en rapport avec elle." In: Bibliotheque Britannique, ou Recuell extrait des Ouvrages Anglais periodiques et autres." Geneva, Imp. De la Bibliotheque Britannique, 1815, vol 58. Science et Arts, 1815. 384pp. Paper-covered boards and spine. [++] The Wells work appears in full on pp 23-40, 97-111, 193-205, 289-305. [++] There is a little wear and rubbing to the boards, though overall the binding is quite nice, VERY GOOD. The text is very crisp and bright. VG copy overall, if not better. This is the first French translation of Wells' classic work of 1814, and is the work's first appearance on the continent. [++] ".in essence, Wells is outlining a surface heat budget a more-or-less comprehensive accounting of the energy flowing to and from the earth s surface. This, too, would be a vexed matter in the global warming debate of the early 21st century. This, though Wells certainly could not have dreamed it, is actually an important part of the mechanism of the greenhouse effect: when greenhouse gases increase, they shorten the average length that radiant heat can travel through the atmosphere before being absorbed. Therefore, the average altitude from which heat can radiate to space increases. But since higher altitudes imply colder air, and since colder air is a less effective radiator, heat loss to space is slowed. "--"Global Warming Science In The Age Of Washington And Jefferson: William Charles Wells" on WebHub. [++] "It would take too much space to follow all of Wells' ingenious experiments, but his conclusions can be stated. The cooling of the Earth's surface, and of the bodies that accumulate dew, is the result of radiation to space. This radiation is always going on, but can be largely interrupted by clouds; and in the daytime it is overbalanced by the radiation to the Earth from the Sun"--(Middleton, W.E.K., A History of the Theories of Rain and other Forms of Precipitation, 1966, p. 189) [++] "Wells' researches on the subject were of major importance in the development of the science of ventilation, particularly in its relation to relative humidity and the influence of the latter on the comfort of the occupants of factories, ships, theatres, etc. Wells was physician to St. Thomas's Hospital, London, from 1800 until his death"--Garrison-Morton 1604. [++] Wells' paper would be widely recognized and his research accepted, an effort for which Wells was awarded the Royal Society's fifth Rumford Medal.
