Hardcover. lxxvii, [1], 224 p.; 19.5 cm. [title continues] York and Philadelphia, U.S.A. -- Contents: Preface -- Introduction: of the Holy Eucharist, of the priesthood, of lay baptism, of holy matrimony, of the sufficiency of grace, of post-mortem probation, of endless rewards and punishments, of Holy Scripture, of the "kenosis" of God the Son -- Catholic papers [unsigned]: The inspiration of Holy Scripture; The deutero-canonical books of the Old Testament and the ante-Nicene fathers; Science and mrracles; The doctrinal system underlying the prayer book and articles; Fasting reception of the Holy Communion; The indissolubility of marriage; The anointing of the sick. -- From the preface: `As of old in St. Paul's day, so now;--many are these voices heard in the Church, and far too many of them with a very bad signification. We have this half-mad craze after a so-called "Church Unity," which looks to some like an attempt to unite Christ and Belial. We have the popular craze of a so-called "Liberalism," and undenominationalism. We have the craze of "Universalism," in the awfully important matter of the eternal state of men, after death. We have the conceited craze of a sort of "literary vivisection" over the words and meaning of Holy Scripture--so painfully unsettling to the faith of some. Many, indeed, are these voices going out to day; and their din and confusion, to those who long for a stable faith, and fixed convictions in religious belief, verily is only as the discordant cry from another huge Tower of Babel, rising before our eyes! Amidst them all, may the Holy Ghost shew us what is the Catholic Faith.' Good ex-lib. orig. red cloth. Paper title-piece rubbed.

188 pages, 111 b/w and 30 color photographs, 37 drawings, 1 map. A wonderful exhibition of Aztec art, the first truly representative survey of the art of the Aztec people held outside Mexico, drawn from museums around the world, but particularly from Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology and the Templo Mayor, was held at the National Gallery of Art. The discovery of the ritual heart of the Aztec Empire--at the Templo Mayor and the sacred precinct of Tenochtitlan--has brought to light much new information that is discussed in the text of this out of print catalogue of the exhibition. Wonderful photographs--especially those in color--of the objects, some of which have never before been in view away from the excavation sites.

Wiki: "The Siege of Port Arthur, the deep-water port and Russian naval base at the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria, was the longest and most violent land battle of the Russo-Japanese War.[It] saw the introduction of much technology used in subsequent wars of the 20th century (particularly in World War I) including massive 28 cm howitzers capable of hurling 478-poun) shells over 5 miles, as well as rapid-firing light howitzers, Maxim machine guns, bolt-action magazine rifles, barbed wire entanglements, electric fences, arc lamp searchlights, tactical radio signalling (and, in response, the first military use of radio jamming), hand grenades, extensive trench warfare, and the use of modified naval mines as land weapons." Today, the Bodleian Library has the largest known collection of Sanskrit manuscripts outside the Indian subcontinent numbering some 11,000 items in all. The first catalogue (in two volumes + 1 supplement) of their collection was published between 1864 and 1909. The first volume was intended to be executed by Professor F. Max Müller in 1855, but his engagements did not allow him to complete it. The task was therefore attributed to Theodor Aufrecht who completed the first volume in 1864. A supplement of Professor Aufrecht's first volume was published in 1909, but is not featured in this offer. The first volume contains Vatsyayana's Kamasutra; the Yoga sutras of Patanjali; the Romaka Siddhanta (an Indian astronomical treatise), etc. Compiled by Arthur Keith, the catalogue's second volume is divided into two parts, and contains manuscripts of Vedic, and non-Vedic litterature. Both volumes have an extensive index of the authors and their relatives; scribes and their relatives and patrons; former owners; works; historical names; and places. Bindings partly soiled and darkened. Ex-library copy, with bookplate on inside of each front cover, stamp at upper and lower paper edges, and reference number on inside of each back cover. Text of first volume in Latin. Second volume in English. Bindings in overall good-, interior in good+ to very good condition.
