If we do not look to the past, we cannot see into the future.…The story of Weedon Island Preserve is an old one and it continues. This work is based on available factual information. However, as the title of this book implies, some information is incidental and speculative. Part of Weedeon Island's history is told in old newspaper articles and other Tampa Bay area periodicals. But much of the information contained in the following pages comes from oral history conveyed by individuals with first-hand knowledge of events at Weedon Island. Therefore, this narrative includes some supposition, local legend and memories of those who witnessed long-ago events. Nearly two years were spent researching the first edition of this story. The original intent was simple -- to discover why pine trees were absent on the south half of the island (this is answered later in the story). This question led to another, and to another, and before long, the history of the area began to unfold. Much of the research involved simple, and sometimes not so simple, detective work to locate individuals able to share their knowledge of past events and people.
