Leur lieu d'origine reste incertain. Jean-Marc Prieur traduit et commente dans ce volume tous les documents qui, en grec, en latin ou en copte, permettent encore d'acceder au text…e primitif ou peuvent servir a sa reconstruction. Nous pouvons suivre les peregrinations, les miracles et la predication de l'apotre Andre de l'Asie mineure jusqu'en Grece ou, a Patras, il convertit la femme du proconsul; par consequent, celle-ci se refuse a son mari. Il en resulte le martyre de l'apotre: arrete, Andre est crucifie (on connait la "croix de saint Andre" .), tandis que son persecuteur, abandonne par sa femme, finit par se suicider. Comme dans les autres Actes apocryphes, l'apotre apparait ici d'apres le modele de l'"homme divin", que le christianisme a repris des religions hellenistiques (et que l'apotre Paul avait refuse.): c'est le predicateur qui dans sa parole et ses prodiges revele la puissance du dieu qu'il annonce. Les discours missionnaires d'Andre occupent une place importante et vehiculent une lecture particuliere du plan mis en oeuvre par Dieu en faveur du salut des humains, et de la maniere dont ceux-ci y adherent; cette lecture peut nous paraitre singuliere, mais elle temoigne d'une theologie qui a du caracteriser un milieu ecclesial donne. Jean-Marc Prieur, professeur de theologie pratique a la Faculte de theologie protestante de Montpellier, est docteur en theologie de l'Universite de Geneve. Specialiste des origines chretiennes et de la litterature apocryphe en particulier, il est l'auteur d'une edition critique des Actes d'Andre accompagnee d'un large commentaire, qui a paru dans le Corpus Christianorum, Series Apocryphorum. Nice copy. ?Prieur?s volumes on the Acts of Andrew are thorough, and very detailes, especially in their critical and textual analysis. Prieur?s first volume, Praefatio - Commentarius, describes the history…of the text, the sources available to modern editors, and its likely construction. Other traditions concerning the life of Andrew are also considered. Part 2 of the first volume then discusses literary questions, such as author, sources, date, and includes a lengthy commentary on the contents of the speeches and prayers. About thirty pages of this section are devoted to Andrew?s famous prayer to the cross. Prieur also has a section dealing with the recurrent yet ambiguous sacrament found in the Apocrypha Acts, namely ?sealing? This is helpful too. A final section to this volume discusses the theological teaching and presuppositions of the apocryphal. This is a useful synthesis. Also of importance is the impressive list of alleged links between these Acts and those of Paul, Peter, Thomas and John (pp,385-406): such a list must be taken into account in any discussion of the literary interdependence and relative dates of these ancient Acts.? Paperback - La croix, instrument du supplice de Jésus, a fait l'objet de nombreuses interprétations théologiques et symboliques durant les premiers siècles de l'histoire de l'Eglise. Il s'agissait à la fois d'expliquer le…sens de cette mort aux chrétiens, et d'en rendre compte face aux païens et aux juifs, dans une perspective apologétique. On eut, pour ce faire, souvent recours à l'Ancien Testament. Cet ouvrage s'intéresse à ce que dit la littérature chrétienne de la fin du IIe au début du IVe siècle sur la croix, non pas à toutes les allusions à la mort de Jésus, ce qui est une question plus vaste. On découvre que la croix fut un réel scandale pour la conscience chrétienne. Et si ce scandale fut accepté et intégré dans leur réflexion par plusieurs auteurs, beaucoup semblent avoir voulu le contourner en symbolisant la croix, en la comparant à des éléments du monde, parfois en la personnalisant.
