Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About The Book: The main point at issue discussed in this essay, is whether, as an engineering project, the head of the Ganges Canal should have been led off above the commencement of the high land of the Northern Doab, where the river runs upon shingle on a high incline ; or below…it, by the construction of a dam across the river, where it flows in a depressed trough, upon a sandy bed. The former plan was adopted by me, and although it has been assailed by Sir Arthur Cotton, I hold that it was the only sound one. But in order to justify it, I have been compelled to enter into minute and tedious details regarding the surface contour of the country ; the slopes of the river beds in relation to the higher levels and slope of the land ; and the lines of drainage, by which the Doab is longitudinally intersected. About The Author : Col. Sir Proby Thomas Cautley (1802-1871), KCB, English engineer and palaeontologist, born in Stratford St Mary, Suffolk, is best known for conceiving and supervising the construction of the Ganges canal during East India Company rule in India. Cautley's writings indicated his large and varied interests. He wrote on a submerged city, twenty feet underground, in the Doab: on the coal and lignite in the Himalayas; on gold washings in the Siwaliks, between the Sutlej and the Yamuna; on a new species of snake; on the mastodons of the Siwaliks and on the manufacture of tar. General Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton (1803-1899) KCSI was a British general and irrigation engineer. Cotton devoted his life to the construction of irrigation and navigation canals throughout British India. He helped many people by building the Dowleswaram Barrage, the Prakasam Barrage and the Kurnool Cuddappah Canal. The Title 'Ganges Canal : A Disquisition on the Heads of The Ganges and Jumna Canals, North-Western Provinces written/authored/edited by Col. Sir Proby T. Cautley, General Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton', published in the year 2023. The ISBN 9788121296267 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 113 (Pages). Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About The Book: "Fauna Antiqua Sivalensis" is a pivotal work in the study of fossil zoology, focusing on the rich paleontological record of the Siwalik Hills in northern India. This region, dating back to the late Miocene and Pliocene epochs, has yielded a diverse array of fossils,…including mammals, reptiles, and birds. The findings highlight evolutionary transitions and provide insights into ancient ecosystems. Key discoveries include early hominoids and large herbivores, which illuminate the region's climatic shifts and biogeographical connections. Overall, this work is crucial for understanding the evolutionary history of South Asian fauna and its environmental context. About The Author: Hugh Falconer (1802-1871) was a Scottish geologist, botanist, paleontologist, and paleoanthropologist renowned for his extensive studies of the flora, fauna, and geology of India, Assam, and Burma. He played a pivotal role in advancing paleontological research in the region, notably discovering significant fossil remains. Falconer was also a precursor to modern evolutionary theory, notably proposing concepts akin to punctuated equilibrium, which emphasize periods of rapid change in species evolution interspersed with long stasis. His contributions significantly shaped the understanding of evolutionary processes. Sir Proby Thomas Cautley (1802-1871) was an English engineer and paleontologist renowned for his role in the construction of the Ganges Canal during East India Company rule in India. His contributions significantly advanced irrigation and agricultural development in the region, showcasing his expertise in engineering and public works. The Title 'Fauna Antiqua Sivalensis, being the Fossil Zoology of the Sewalik Hills, in the North of India written/authored/edited by Hugh Falconer and Proby T. Cautley', published in the year 2024. The ISBN 9789367805213 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 212 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a fascinating engineering debate that raged in 19th century India, specifically focusing on the construction of irrigation canals in the North-Western Provinces. At the heart of this debate is the choice between two distinct approaches for drawing water for the c…anals: drawing from the rivers' upper reaches, where they run over boulders and shingle on a steep incline, or building dams across the rivers' lower courses where they flow through sandy troughs. The author, a prominent engineer of his time, passionately defends his choice of the former method, challenging the views of Sir Arthur Cotton, a renowned advocate for the dam approach. The book goes beyond a mere engineering discussion, exploring the complex interplay of geographical features, hydrological patterns, and the social and economic implications of the two approaches. The author meticulously examines the nature of the Ganges and Jumna rivers, their sources in the Himalayas, and the unique characteristics of the Sewalik Hills, analyzing the availability and suitability of construction materials for each method. He delves into the cyclical nature of river flows, including the monsoon rains, snow melt, and the unpredictable occurrences of sudden floods. The author further explores the potential for damage to villages and agricultural lands caused by backwater and inundation, as well as the sanitary concerns associated with creating artificial lakes and marshlands. The book offers a valuable historical glimpse into the challenges and considerations that shaped the development of irrigation infrastructure in colonial India, highlighting the importance of understanding the intricate relationship between nature and human intervention. The author's detailed analysis of the rivers and surrounding terrain provides a compelling argument for the careful consideration of local conditions in large-scale engineering projects. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
