The first edition, elaborately bound, of Bryan Waller Procter's (1787- 1874) letterpress for engraved portraits of one hundred and thirty-eight significant British poets, including, inter alia, Pope, Johnson, Dryden, and Shakespeare. The binder, German-born Charles Hering (d. 1809), was called 'the artistic successor to Roger Payne, the doyen of English bookbinders'.
