Though without his signature, this copy is from the library of Theobald Smith (1859-1934); with an inserted autograph letter signed (that was sent to Smith, and inserted by him into this book) The ALS is on a folded note sheet of 8 in. x 9 3/4 in. paper, watermarked: Crane's Distaff Linen 1905, with printed heading: United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Consulting Scientific Experts. Without addressee's name, or envelope. [Text]: "Trip to Boston cancelled.-Confinded to house by grip. Test of tubercle bacilli easy. [cancelled lines: Need not be] Need not be done here. On the inside of this note, some chemical formulas have been added in pencil (possibly by Theobald Smith), approximately: Cu Cl2 + CN K2 Fe2 (CN)6 Cu Fe (CN)6 2Hg. N O3 Hg2 O. N2 O5. This book came from a small group of other books owned by Theobald Smith. To quote the Columbia Encyclopedia (1950) on Smith: "Smith, Theobald, 1859-1934, American pathologist, born Albany, N. Y., M.D. Albany Medical College, 1883. He was professor of bacteriology at Columbian (now George Washington) University (1886-95) and of pathology at Harvard (1896-1915) and served as pathologist with the Department of Agriculture (1884-95), the Massachusetts state board of health (1895-1915), and Rockefeller Institute (1915-29). He discovered the parasite causing Texas cattle fever and its transmission by the cattle tick, differentiated between human and bovine tuberculosis, and contributed greatly to preventive medicine. He wrote 'Studies in Vaccinal Immunity' (with R. B. Little, 1923) and 'Parasitism and Disease' (1934).". Interesting association item, that might repay further research.
