Bonney, Thomas George, geologist, whose autobiography, Memories of a Long Life (1921), says little about his geological work, but records his impressive alpine achievements, gives fascinating insights into Cambridge life in the nineteenth century, and reveals the author as a tremendous trencherman with a seemingly inordinate interest in food. Bumped and somewhat frayed at the corner tips of the beveled boards and a little wear to the spine ends. Vol. II has an area of light scuffing towards the top edge. Internally there are no inscriptions and the pages are, in the main fresh and bright. That said there is a little light staining (perhaps an old water stain from a drink spill) restricted to the top corner of the front free end paper and the paste down page opposite in the same position. Light toning and mild to moderate foxing to the page block edge and prelim pages.

Gilt-stamped lettering with gilt and gray stamped cathedral illustrations on front boards; gilt lettering and small gray cathedral illustrations on spines; back panels have blind-stamped designs in the centers. External page edges are tinted and red speckled. Boards are minimally scuffed except for 2" by 3/8" scrape at upper edge of front board panel on Vol I. Edges at head and tail of board spines are crimped, with several small vertical tears and start of fraying. Fore-edge corners are scuffed and several are rubbed through. Back fore-edge of Vol I have two shallow bumps. Upper fore-edge corners on Vol II are bumped. Previous owner's inscription on both FFEP versos. Light soil to end-papers. Shallow diagonal creasing across upper fore-edge corners in Vol II. Text pages are age-toned. Minimal foxing and that primarily on the several first and last pages. A two volume set in green boards with gilt titles. Vol. 1 404 pages with plates and photographs. Some spotting to prelims and the margins of just a few pages. The boards have a couple of very minor knicks. Vol. 2 434 pages and in very similar condition to the first volume. The pair make a handsome set and are in extremely good condition for their age.
