Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This volume offers a revisionist view of World War I. The author contends that the popular view that World War I was, in the words of historian John Keegan, "tragic and unnecessary", is wrong. It is his argued belief that such a conclusion does not represent the cutting edge of research into the most controversial conflict in British history. Based on 20 years of research, as well as reflecting the interpretations of the revisioniest school of historians based around the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, the Imperial War Museum and the British Commission for Military History, this book challenges the fundamental assumptions underpinning the traditional belief that World War I was a wholly futile conflict. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardback. Condizione: As New. World War I stands as a watershed in the evolution of modern warfare, with the development of sophisticated trench systems forming a battlefield over 400 miles long, notable improvements in weaponry and equipment and the first example of tanks being used in battle. This book examines the day-to-day lives of the British Tommy, the German Stormtrooper, the French Poilu and the American Doughboy as they fought and died in the trenches, with details of their recruitment and training and vivid descriptions of combat on the Western Front. It also provides an extensive reassessment of trench warfare, following the development of controversial tactics and new weapons, the first use of poison gas in warfare and the introduction of the tank - initially an accident-prone novelty but later a front-breaking weapon. Contents: Foreword - Part 1: Warriors on the Western Front - Stormtrooper - Poilu - Tommy - Doughboy Part 2: Trench Warfare - Bibliography - Index.

Paperback. Professor Gary Sheffield, Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. World War I stands as a watershed in the evolution of modern warfare, with the development of sophisticated trench systems forming a battlefield over 400 miles long, innovations in weaponry and equipment and the introduction of tanks in battle. Without the ordinary soldier, however, there could have been no war: the Great War was very much a conflict of infantrymen - the largely forgotten masses of Tommies, Fritzes, Poilus and Doughboys. With a foreword by renowned World War I historian Gary Sheffield, "War on the Western Front" examines the day-to-day lives of these men as they fought and died in the trenches, from their recruitment and training to combat experience, vividly recounting the shock of life on 'the front'.It also provides an extensive re-assessment of trench warfare, a revolutionary tactic that challenged the very idea of war, and details developments in weaponry and armoured vehicles, including terrifying innovations in the use of poison gas, flamethrowers and tanks. This book contains material from previously published books: "War", number 12, 16, 79 and Elite, number 78 & 84. Illustrated With Photographs (illustratore). Paperback.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Gallipoli and the Middle East 1914 - 1918. From the Dardanelles to Mesopotamia (History of World War I The) By Edward J. Erickson, Professor Gary Sheffield. Hardback, no annotations, fine condition, dust jacket very good condition, minor shelf wear. 224 pages. Published by Amber Books Ltd, 2008. ISBN: 1906626049. 150 colour and b/w photographs 50 artworks. The Allied landing and subsequent campaign on the peninsula during World War I is usually known in Britain as the Dardanelles Campaign and in Turkey as the Battle of Çanakkale. In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Newfoundland, the term Gallipoli alone is used to describe the 8 month campaign. In early 1915 Russia was fighting a multi front war against Germany, Austria/Hungary, and Turkey. While it had a sizable army it struggled to deliver sufficient supplies to the troops. The landings at Gallipoli were an Allied attempt to clear a supply path through the Dardanelles to Russia. This would also assist them by putting pressure on Turkey by threatening Istanbul. On April 25, 1915, after failed attempts to force a passage through the Dardanelles by naval forces alone, a force of British Empire and French troops landed at multiple places along the peninsula. The battles over the next 8 months saw high casualties on both sides due to the exposed terrain, weather and closeness of the front lines. The invasion forces were successfully blocked by the Turkish troops and the subsequent Allied withdrawal meant the Russians would not be receiving supplies through the Dardanelles. The battle is often referred to for its successful stealthy retreat which was completed with minimal casualties, the ANZAC forces completely retreating by December 19, 1915 and the remaining British elements by January 9, 1916. Overall, there were around 300,000 Allied casualties including around 100,000 deaths and 150,000 Turkish casualties including around 20,000 deaths. The Gallipoli campaign gave an important boost to the career of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a little-known army commander who became a national hero, was promoted to Pasha, and became the founder of the modern Turkish state with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, at the end of World War I. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent free by courier postage within New Zealand.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 1918, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) played a critical role in defeating the German army and thus winning the First World War. This 'Hundred Days' campaign (August to November 1918) was the greatest series of land victories in British military history. 1918 also saw the creation of the Royal Air Force, the world's first independent air service, from the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Until recently, British histories of the First World War have tended to concentrate on the earlier battles of 1916 and 1917 and often underplayed this vitally important period.Changing War fills this significant gap in our knowledge by providing in-depth examinations of key aspects of the operations of the British Army, the Royal Air Force and its antecedents in the climactic year of the First World War. Written by a group of established historians and emerging scholars it sheds light not only on 1918, but on the revolutionary changes in warfare that took place at that time.
