Jahrhundert zur medizinischen Spezialdisziplin und zum Rückgrat der neu entstehenden naturwissenschaftlichen Medizin. Mit Hilfe der Öffnung der Leiche des verstorben…en Patienten wurde erstmals systematisch Wissen über krankhaft veränderte Organe, Gewebe und Zellen erarbeitet. Diese Entwicklung ging von Deutschland, vor allem von Berlin, aus. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die weitere Entwicklung des Faches in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, als die Humanmedizin sich anschickte, eine therapeutische Disziplin zu werden. Der Vergleich zwischen Berlin und London verdeutlicht zwei unterschiedliche Entwicklungslinien des Faches und damit auch der westlichen Humanmedizin. Während sich die Pathologie in Berlin auf die Arbeit im Leichensaal konzentrierte, knüpften die Londoner Pathologen an andere deutsche Traditionslinien an, indem nach 1900 eine 'klinische Pathologie' aufgebaut wurde. Sie orientierte sich weniger am toten als am lebenden Patienten, dessen Körperflüssigkeiten und Gewebe noch zu dessen Lebzeiten im Labor untersucht wurden. Diese unterschiedliche Praxis der Pathologie entsprach den jeweiligen sozialen, wirtschaftlichen, politischen sowie auch ethisch-moralischen Umfeldbedingungen in beiden Städten. Medizin am Toten oder am Lebenden Dies ist die Frage nach länderspezifisch unterschiedlichen kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen der Medizin im 20. Jahrhundert.
