Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 260 pages ; frontispiece, 20 cm OCLC similar to 1087431752 ; ed brick cloth with lettering and design in gold ; some wear to covers ; no dustjacket ; excised front endpaper ; The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories of the Four Million by O. Henry is a collection of short stories that vividly captures the lives of ordinary people living in New York City. The collection explores themes of love, ambition, sacrifice, and the complexity of human relationships, often set against the backdrop of the city's bustling, sometimes harsh, environment. O. Henry's signature twist endings are evident throughout the stories, where he uses irony and surprise to reveal the unexpected turns of fate that affect his characters' lives. Many of the stories focus on the lives of the working class and the struggle for survival in a rapidly changing society. The characters in the collection are often caught between their dreams and their realities, revealing the gap between aspiration and achievement in the face of social and economic challenges. With its poignant humor and insightful social commentary, the collection paints a rich, sometimes bittersweet portrait of life in the city, showcasing O. Henry's mastery of storytelling and his ability to illuminate the human condition in both its light and dark moments. ; better known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer known primarily for his short stories, though he also wrote poetry and non-fiction. His works include "The Gift of the Magi", "The Caballero's Way", "The Duplicity of Hargraves", and "The Ransom of Red Chief", as well as the novel Cabbages and Kings. Porter's stories are known for their naturalist observations, witty narration, and surprise endings. ; Contents:The trimmed lamp -- A Madison Square Arabian Night -- The Rubaiyat of a scotch highball -- The pendulum -- Two Thanksgiving Day gentlemen -- The assessor of success -- The buyer from Cactus City -- The badge of Policeman O'Roon -- Brickdust Row -- The making of a New Yorker -- Vanity and some sables -- The social triangle -- The purple dress -- The foreign policy of Company 99 -- The lost blend -- A Harlem tragedy -- "The guilty party"--an eastside tragedy -- According to their lights -- A midsummer knight's dream -- The last leaf -- The count nd the wedding guest -- The country of Elusion -- The ferry of unfulfillment -- The tale of a tainted tenner -- Elsie in New York ; VG. Aggiungi al carrelloNew York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1910. Original red cloth. First Edition of this collection of 24 short stories, many of them ending with classic "I did not see that coming" twists. Included is one of his best-known, "The Ransom of Red Chief." WHIRLIGIGS was published in September 1910, three months after the author's death (at age 47) -- due to two years of increasingly bad health brought on by diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, and heart disease. Aggiungi al carrelloNew York: The McClure Company, 1908. 1 page undated ads. Original red cloth. First Edition, first printing (with only the endpaper following the ad leaf), first binding (with "McClure" rather than "Doubleday, Page & Co." at the foot of the spine). This was O. Henry's third volume of 25 very short stories about the people of New York City -- following THE FOUR MILLION (1906) and THE TRIMMED LAMP (1907). He had settled there among the four million residents in 1902, after his three-year imprisonment in Texas for bank embezzlement. This is a close-to-fine copy (no wear, and only a little of the unavoidable spine-fading) -- and is uncommon in this condition. Blanck 16275. Provenance: endpaper signature of Nelson Dwight Phelps, dated in Oakland in July 1908, and (appropriately) bearing the bookseller's label of Paul Elder & Company of San Francisco.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFrontispiece by Alice Barber Stephens. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1907. Original red cloth. First Edition of "O. Henry"'s third book, following CABBAGES AND KINGS (1904) and THE FOUR MILLION (1906). Like his preceding volume, these are short stories and vignettes (often ending with "a twist") about the people of New York City; he had settled there among the four million residents in 1902, after his three-year imprisonment in Texas for bank embezzlement. This is a just-about-fine copy, with no soil or wear, and with only a little of the spine-fading that typically afflicts these red O. Henry volumes; there is slight wrinkling of a fore-corner of the leaves. An uncommon title. Blanck 16273. Provenance: endpaper signature of Harriet Holmes Haslett of Alameda, author of numerous short stories about her native San Francisco in the 1920s.…
