A business card for publisher and bookseller John Ignatius Cullen (1834-1874). An immigrant from Britain, Cullen was then working with D. & J. Sadlier & Co. of New York City, a bookbinding and publishing house producing predominantly Catholic material. The address listed on the business card, 31 Barclay St., dates it to between 1862 and Cullen's death in 1874. The New York Tablet(1858-1881) was a Catholic periodical managed by Irish immigrant author Mary Anne Sadlier, wife of publisher James Sadlier. The Sadliers were prominent in New York's Irish Catholic society, and their friends included Archbishop John Hughes, Canadian politician Thomas D'Arcy McGee, and activist and Catholic convert Orestes Brownson.
