Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: As New. No Jacket. Interior illustrations by J.E.M. Pugsley (illustratore). 1st Edition. An interesting alphabetical catalog of wild plants of the Northern Hemisphere known to have medicinal or consciousness-altering effects, from tobacco to henbane to the opium poppy and the psilocybin mushrooms, illustrated with B&W photos and drawings which may prove of some help in identification. (Amanita muscaria is alphabetized here as "Fly agaric.") However, the write-ups here tend to be more anecdotal than rigorous, either botanically (distinguishing the described plants from look-alikes is handled pretty casually, and virtually everything is said to grow "in waste places, in hedge banks, railway banks, and at the side of roads" . . . presumably everywhere from Fairbanks to Tashkent?) or pharmacologically. In other words, while this is an attractive and intriguing slim quarto paperback in "as-new" condition, and while the author does insert the de rigueur advice that one shouldn't go carelessly ingesting plants known to be poisonous, (WARNING) this volume should not be relied upon as a sole source before engaging in the medical or psychoactive use of just about anything. 110 pp. followed by 4 pp. ads for other books from this publisher, which is unfortunately now defunct. Reduced from $120.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book's comprehensive examination of the history of the United States's Bowdoin College does more than provide a timeline of dates and names. The author draws upon archival research and published materials to tell the story of this prestigious institution from its humble beginnings in the 18th century to its present-day standing as one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges. The book explores the ways in which Bowdoin has reflected and shaped American social and intellectual history, including the contentious debates over slavery and the role religion should play in higher education. The author considers Bowdoin's commitment to fostering intellectual inquiry and independent thinking, and its expansion into new fields of study from the natural sciences to engineering. This book is an invaluable resource for historians of higher education, as well as anyone interested in the history of a college that has played an influential role in shaping Maine and the nation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
