Met dit voornemen werd in februari 1847 in Den Haag het Schilderkundig Genootschap Pulchri Studio opgericht, wat uit ijver voor het schone betekent. Het eerste reglement werd ondertekend door 57 kunstenaars. Al vroeg was Pulchri een eerbiedwaardig instituut in de Hofstad, niet in het minst door de ruimhartige koninklijke belangstelling. Sinds 1898 huist Pulchri aan het Lange Voorhout voor haar kunstbeschouwingen, tentoonstellingen, luisterrijke sociëteitsfeesten met hun tableaux vivants en haar avonden waar getekend werd naar gekleed en ongekleed model.
