Wie Vögel ihre Flugbahnen in den Himmel schreiben, Schriftzüge, die sofort wieder gelöscht und überschrieben werden, hat Barbara Pumhösel schon in ihrer Kindheit fasziniert, und im Bewusstsein, dass der damit betretene thematische Raum in der Literatur kein Neuland, sondern ganz im Gegenteil viel bemüht und viel strapaziert ist, konnte ihn die Dichterin, wie sie selbst sagt, dennoch nicht umgehen. Sie ist damit in bester zeitgenössischer Gesellschaft, wenn etwa die britische Autorin Deborah Levy, genau wie Pumhösel Jahrgang 1959, in ihrem autobiografischen Text The Cost of Living schreibt: 'Ich habe aufgehört, darüber nachzudenken, warum ich von Vögeln besessen bin, aber es könnte etwas mit Tod und Erneuerung zu tun haben.'Vögel und einige andere von Natur aus flugfähige Wesen sind es also, die uns in Pumhösels Gedichten begegnen. Die Dichterin beobachtet das Naturgeschehen und gewinnt ihren Beobachtungen vielfältige poetische Reflexionen ab, die sich in präzisen, unaufgeregten Versen dem Leser und der Leserin mitteilen. Dies gerät nie zur romantisierenden Vereinnahmung; das Tier in seinem Anderssein ist vielmehr Anlass für ein respektvoll befragendes Möglichkeitsdenken, für Entwürfe und (mitunter auch ironische) Gegenentwürfe, für die Dekonstruktion der Stereotypen und ihre Umwandlung in etwas Neues.
