This is both a natural history of the lake, and a local history of the settlement of the area around Eagle Lake in northern California. Black and white photos, many are period photographs. A fascinating history of Big Meadows and the Progressive Era in California. After the meadows had been secured by stealth and deception - including possible criminal acts - during the period 1900 - 1914 by Great Western Power Company (nee Western Power Company) and a few of its cronies, a dam was constructed and the meadows flooded. The resulting reservoir, Lake Almanor, drew nary a protest from conservationists of the time. Also includes interesting essays on early pioneers and families of the area.
