He was a partner in several firms before establishing his own in 1848. In 1852 he founded Putnam's Magazine, later merging it with Scribner's Monthly. His publishing firm was extremely successful and remains today as part of the Penguin publishing group. He strong interest in art led him to become one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; he was the author of several books on history, biography, and reference.
