Throughout much of English history, and well into the modern age, it was generally very hard, if no downright impossible, for the average citizen of low income to obtain an official divorce. This created a variety of solutions that are quite shocking, even considering the social environment . From the jacket blurb : "Addressing a bigamous and indigent hawker in the middle of the 19th century, Justice Maule declared, 'Sitting here as an English judge it is my duty to tell you that this is not a country in which there one law for the rich and another for the poor. You will be imprisoned for one day.'
