Aggiungi al carrelloBoth in the same style. ONE: 'Cheap Meat.' Dimensions: paper 25 x 29.5 cm; plate 22.5 x 27.5 cm; image 18.5 x 23.5 cm. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight discoloration to corners from previous mounting. Beneath plate: 'W. H. Pyne delt. Smart & Hunt sculpt.' A curious eighteenth-century scene, the significance of which is now lost, showing an angry old man in greatcoat and hat, a laughing crowd in the street behind him, bursting in to a bookshop and knocking over a stool and inkpot, to the surprise and outrage of an old woman with a stick, a younger woman and dog, while the owner, quill pen behind ear, leans over from behind the counter, and a young clerk in a pulpit looks down smiling. TWO: 'A Thief in the Kirk.' Dimensions: paper 23.5 x 29 cm; plate 22 x 27 cm; image 18 x 23.5 cm. In good condition, with slight damage to corners from previous mounting, and light damp staining to head of border. The fiendish looking thief, clutching his bonnet, and dressed in tartan jacket and kilt, vaults over a pew to make his escape, while the minister, his clerk, and a congregation of grotesques (including the obligatory beautiful young girl) look on. As with the other print, no information on this illustration has been discovered.

Prima edizione
4to., (11 x 8 inches). Half-title. Chromolithographed title-page, and 24 fine tinted plates. Contemporary full black beveled morocco gilt, all edges gilt and gauffered (a bit rubbed). Provenance: Presented to the Hon. Rev. Lesley Pouve Esq, in July 1873, accompanied by a lengthy but obscure letter. First edition, and an attractive copy. "Notwithstanding the unrivalled beauty of the Scenery of the Lake District of England, and the number of pictures of detached portions of it, which have been painted and exhibited, from time to time, during the last half-century, there exists no work which comprises a consecutive series of illustrations of this picturesque locality, nor, indeed, of any considerable portion of its scenery, at all worthy of its character" (Introduction). Including views of Coniston, Windermere, Rydal, Grasmere, Langdale, Thirlemere, Ulleswater, Buttermere, the Derwent, and Keswick amongst others. Abbey Scenery 196. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Three volumes, Large Folio (425 x 340mm). Large Paper Copy. 100 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland, R. Reeve, W.J. Bennett, D. Havell and J. Baily after C. Wild, J. Stephanoff, R. Cattermole, W. Westall and G. Samuel. (occasinal spotting, margin staining, marks). Rebound half green morocco, gilt titles. uncut copy. FIRST EDITION. A Good copy of the most ambitious aquatint book to be published on English interiors. This celebrated work was the first to illustrate royal palaces and houses in any detail. Volume I is a valuable record of the state rooms of Windsor Castle formed for Charles II, and concludes with the more domestic scenes of Frogmore, purchased by Queen Charlotte as a country retreat in 1793. Volume II is devoted to Hampton Court, whose state rooms had fallen into disuse for almost 60 years, Buckingham Palace, bought for the Queen for £28,000 shortly after her marriage to George III, and Kensington Palace, constructed for William III, but so neglected by 1814 that the Duke of Kent complained of 'rain pouring through the ceiling at twenty different points' and of being 'literally perishing with cold in my library'. St. James's Palace and Carlton House form the subject of volume III, and while the former had been badly burned in 1809, the 20 plates devoted to the Prince Regent's residence show what were regarded as the most spectacular interiors in Regency London. Abbey Scenery 396; Tooley 389. Scarce Large Paper Copy.
