Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts spi…elten sie eine entscheidende Rolle im Geflecht der gemeinsamen und widerstreitenden Interessen, deren nationale und regionale Auswirkungen das Leben der Menschen in der Golfregion beeinflussten. In den ersten Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts sah sich Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr bin Rashid al-Qasimi beträchtlichen Zwängen und hohem Druck ausgesetzt. Schließlich unterzeichnete er 1820 den General Maritime Treaty, den ersten Allgemeinen Seevertrag" mit Großbritannien. Der Vertrag sicherte den Briten die Vorherrschaft im Golf und die Kontrolle der Handelsrouten nach Indien und Fernost. Durch eine Reihe von Zusatzverträgen, darunter der Treaty of Exclusivity von 1892, band die britische Krone von ihrem Sitz in Indien aus die Shaikhs der sogenannten Vertragsküste des Arabischen Golfs eng an Großbritannien. Die Shaikhs konnten zwar ihre inneren Angelegenheiten selbst regeln, aber nur, solange sich daraus kein Konflikt mit der britischen Hegemonie ergab und die für die Regierung der Kolonien und den Handel nötige umfassende Kontrolle aller regionalen Angelegenheiten nicht gefährdet war. Mit einer Kombination aus sanfter Diplomatie und erbarmungslosem Zwang hielten die Briten ihre absolute Vormachtstellung in der Region aufrecht. Das Buch berichtet von einigen bedeutenden Ereignissen, die den Entwicklungsverlauf der Region entscheidend beeinflusst haben, und endet damit, dass Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr bin Khalid al-Qasimi, der damalige Herrscher von Sharjah, an Bord des britischen Kriegsschiffes HMS Bideford am 23. Juli 1932 das Sharjah Air Station Agreement unterzeichnet, ein Abkommen, das britischen Zivilflugzeugen erlaubte, in Sharjah zu landen. Diese Öffnung des Arabischen Golfs für die Luftfahrt machte der ganzen Region den Weg ins 20. Jahrhundert frei.
