Aggiungi al carrelloFull Leather. Condizione: Very Good. Fourth Edition. Two volumes. 12mo. Vol. I: [30], 532, [38 pp. index], engraved frontis., folding map, one folding plate. Vol. II: [10], 442, [20 pp. index]. Marbled endpapers. Early polished calf, elaborate gilt-decorated spine, dentelles, red morocco labels. Light wear to spine ends; a corne…rs worn through. Owner inscriptions in old hand on ffep and title. Occasional mild soiling. A handsome set. Fourth edition. Though his dates are uncertain, the rhetorician and historian Quintus Curtius Rufus most likely wrote his Life of Alexander the Great during the reign of Claudius in the middle of the first century C.E.Modeled on the classic style of Livy, perhaps verging toward parody, this emotional portrayal of Alexander is marked by vivid detail, bold speeches and "reflects the Peripatetic view of a tyrant favored by Fortune" (Oxford Classical Dictionary). Only eight of Curtius's 10 books have been passed down from antiquity, leaving gaps. As a historian, Curtius is not read for accuracy: The author himself cheerfully admits he omits nothing his authorities tell him, preferring to entertain the reader with a lively narrative over critical objectivism. .

| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] New edition annotated by Samuel Pitiscus with third edition statement, and illustrated with a frontispiece title, a portrait of Pitiscus, 4 folding maps and 11 plates with 29 numbered figures (most of them folding) often quite curious (the gardens of Babylon) by Johan van den Avelen after G. Hoet. The first edition appears to have been published in 1684. Contemporary brown half sheep binding with corners. Spine with raised bands decorated with 5 fleurons. Brown morocco title-label. Marbled edges. Overall rubbed, with paper lacking to boards. Outer edges worn and corners slightly bumped. Abundantly annotated edition by Pitiscus, including Freinshemius's supplement, and a comprehensive index of antiquities. Pitiscus avoided confrontation with other commentators but endeavored to reproduce in his commentary what he judged best in others, both from grammatical and historical perspectives. This edition was well received by the Journal des savants. Pitiscus would produce a dictionary of Greco-Latin antiquities, of which he was a scholar. * 855pp. (168).

| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] The editions of Quintus Curtius on the life of Alexander were numerous in the 16th century. We have been unable to determine whether this was a first edition from Jean Frellon, although we have not found any earlier edition from this publisher (notably in the Aurelianensis catalogue of 16th-century Lyon editions) present only in the Edinburgh catalogue. Fine printing in Italic Minuscules. The last leaf bears the printer's mark with the scorpion of Michaël Sylvius typographus. Two old manuscript leaves at the end of the work on Alfonso king of Naples, and the Alexander of Quintus Curtius. The last unpaginated part bears as its header: Alexandri magni epistola, de situ India [.] ad Aristotelem praeceptorem suum, in latinitatem vesa a Cornelio Nepote. Full chocolate calf binding from the 19th century. Raised spine decorated in blind with Renaissance friezes. Boards hot-stamped with a Renaissance motif (a flower in a square framed by fleur-de-lis), and blind-stamped with multiple framing fillets (hot-stamped trefoils in the corners). Traces of ties. Edges gilt. Joints rubbed with the upper joint partly split and fragile. Both headcaps have been restored in the past (some damage). 2 corners bumped. First blank endpaper detached, an ochre dampstain in the middle on the first and last leaves. The history of Alexander is the only book by Quintus Curtius (Roman writer of the 1st century) that has come down to us, yet it has reached us incomplete since the first two books have been lost, and the last two are incomplete. His qualities as a writer, his geographical and military knowledge have always been praised, even though they teem with errors. This biography of Alexander would enjoy immense success during the Renaissance. * (28) 325pp. (23) (33).
