Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. 1st UK Edition: xx, 411pages, illustrated, with 98 illustrations by the author and two folding maps. Original black/brown cloth, gilt vignette of man, sled and dogs to front cover. The account of the second unsuccessful attempt by Peary, in 1906, to reach the North Pole. He… was forced to turn back 175 miles from his destination. He passed Ellesmere Land to Cape Sheridan and the Arctic Basin, returning along the coast of Greenland. In this, his second to last expedition he claimed to have reached 87º06', the farthest north any had yet been. Arctic Biblio,13226. Ricks p. 169. Peary made several expeditions attempting to reach the North Pole. In this, his 1906 expedition, he reached latitude 87degrees 06minutes N, about 175 miles from the Pole, the closest to the Pole yet achieved. While ostensibly failures, these expeditions allowed him to test his equipment, dogs and men, honing his skills for what he later (1909) reported to be a successful achievement of the Pole. These 1906 journeys passed Ellesmere Land to Cape Sheridan and the Arctic Basin. He returned to his ship by sledge along the Northern Coast of Greenland. There is appended a report of Peary's explorations in 1898-1902. Whether Peary himself ever reached the North Pole is a subject of some controversy today. Shelfware, bumped, previous owners bookplate to front pastedown, frontispiece and couple of pages cracking at hinge, age toning to pages, contents clean, small tear to one of the two folding maps. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Arctic & Antarctic; Antarctic; 1900-1920; Exploration. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 2687.

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition, First Printing. THE ROOSEVELT EXPEDITION - PEARY'S LAST GREAT ATTEMPT BEFORE THE POLE. Published two years before Robert E. Peary's claimed attainment of the North Pole, Nearest the Pole presents the official narrative of the 1905-1906 Peary Arctic Club Expedition aboard the…S.S. Roosevelt. The expedition reached what Peary reported as a new "Farthest North" at 87° 6? N., pushing farther north than any previous attempt while testing the methods that would define his final polar campaign. Written by Peary and extensively illustrated from his own photographs, the volume records the challenges of Arctic travel, including ship operations, winter survival, sledging techniques, and the use of Inuit knowledge and specialized expedition methods that became central to Peary's polar system. CONTEMPORARY PEARY LECTURE EPHEMERA. Preserved with this copy is an original contemporary newsprint announcement advertising Commander Robert E. Peary's illustrated lecture 'Nearest the Pole.' Measuring approximately 9.25 × 6 inches, the announcement promotes Peary's public presentations of Arctic exploration through "magnificent views," documenting the transition of polar exploration from expeditionary achievement to public spectacle. This period ephemera provides a contemporary connection between Peary's expedition narrative, its publication in 1907, and the public reception of his Arctic achievements. KEY FEATURES +++ Expedition Narrative - Official account of the 1905-1906 Peary Arctic Club Expedition aboard the S.S. Roosevelt. +++ Photographic Record - Illustrated with 95 photographs by Robert E. Peary documenting Arctic landscapes, expedition operations, and Inuit life. +++ Cartographic Record - Includes both large folding maps at the rear, present and intact. +++ Color Frontispiece - Includes the color frontispiece by Albert Operti. +++ Contemporary Ephemera - Original illustrated lecture announcement for Peary's "Nearest the Pole" lecture preserved with the volume. +++ Contemporary Ownership - Front free endpaper bears a gift inscription dated 1907, the year of publication. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Original green cloth binding with gilt spine lettering and decorative gilt and raised stamping to the front board. Royal octavo, approximately 10.25 inches tall. 411 pages, including index. Illustrated throughout with 95 photographs by Peary, a color frontispiece by Albert Operti, and two large folding maps at the rear. CONDITION: Very Good. The binding is tight and square with moderate shelf handling wear and light rubbing to the extremities. The raised decorative stamping remains distinct. The text block is clean with light, even age-toning. Both folding maps are present and intact. Top edge gilt is slightly dulled. A contemporary gift inscription dated 1907 appears on the front free endpaper. The accompanying lecture announcement is Very Good with a faint central vertical fold, now largely flattened from storage, and minor age toning consistent with fragile newsprint. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - THE FINAL STEPS TOWARD THE POLE. Robert E. Peary's 1905-1906 Roosevelt expedition represented one of the final major American efforts before his later claim of reaching the North Pole in 1909. The expedition tested the equipment, transportation methods, and survival strategies that Peary would rely upon during his final campaign. The volume documents the development of the "Peary System," including specialized sledging techniques and the use of Inuit knowledge and Arctic experience. While Peary's polar claims later became the subject of extensive debate, Nearest the Pole remains an important primary source for understanding early twentieth-century Arctic exploration and the methods employed during the race for the Pole. The accompanying lecture announcement adds a valuable contemporary perspective, showing how Peary's Arctic achievements were presented to the public during the period when polar exploration captured worldwide attention.
