[Date from the copyright page.] Volume I---Foreword, Preface, Introduction, List of Illustrations; xxxvii, 204; Volume II---List of Illustrations, Notes, Glossary of Proper Names, Index; xiv, 235 pages. The yellow cloth on both spines is quite sunned with several small tears at the ends; the gilt lettering is still discernible. The cloth extending onto the boards and that on the corners has fared better, remaining rather attractive. The tan paper covering the boards is rubbed along all edges; gilt lettering on upper boards is particularly bright. [Please see multiple images of both volumes.] The interiors of both volumes are clean and bright, despite expected toning to the textblock edges---including a bit on the top edge, colored yellow. All illustrations are clear, and all protective tissues, with text descriptions remain intact on the color plates. [Again, see images.] There is a very small unobtrusive book label on the front pastedowns (in addition to that of my father); and on rear free endpaper, an original pale pencil drawing. From the Foreword: "The original manuscript of this book, left as it was in hasty pencil writing, was little more than a rough draft of the finished work [the author] intended to make of it. . . . Now, in this second edition, Professor R. Petrucci has made a careful revision of the entire work with masterly and painstaking precision." From the Introduction: "This book conceives of the art of each epoch as a peculiar unity of line, spacing, and colour which could have been produced at no other time, and which permeates all the industries of its day ; . . . what has hitherto been written of Chinese Art is rather a study of literary sources than of art itself. . . . The writer wishes to break down the old fallacy of regarding Chinese civilization as standing for thousands of years at a dead level, by openly exhibiting the special environing culture and the special structural beauties which have rendered the art of each period unique."
