Internally in very good condition. The cooperative farm Merhavia was established in the Jezreel Valley in 1911 (24 Tevet 1941), based on the the ideas of Franz Oppenheimer. It survived until 1918. It was the first Jewish settlement in the Jezreel Valley after 2,000 years. and the first agricultural cooperative in the Land of Israel. Today it is a national landmark, situated within Kibbutz Merhavia. The first members were part of Hashomer and were part of the Second Aliyah, the second wave of immigratns to Israel. It was founded as a "cooperative" according to the ideas of the German-Jewish economist and sociologist Prof. Franz Oppenheimer, who convinced Herzl and the participants of the Fifth Zionist Congress to allocated funds for its establishment. According to Oppenheimer ot was to have a cooperative economy whose members received a differential wages, based on their contributions. Aid also came from Arthur Ruppin , Yehoshua Hankin , the Bank of Anglo-Palestine and Eliyahu Blumenfeld. As the first Jewish settlement in the valley, Merhavia, it experienced strong opposition from local Arabs, especially Arabs from Haifa and Nazareth. Shekri al-Asali, the governor of Nazareth, spread propaganda against the settlement, warning that it would lead to the establishment of many other settlements. This caused many conflicts, especially between Jewish and Arab shepherds, and the opposition also led to the intervention by the Ottoman government, which demanded, in a move that was clearly intended to destroy the settlement, that only Ottoman subjects could settle (while the settlers were immigrants). Only after a difficult travails did the administration rescind its demand. The designer of the "Great Yard" in the cooperative was Prof. Oppenheimer's friend, Alexander Brawald, who also designed the Technion in Haifa and many other public buildings in the country. Brawald also founded and managed the Faculty of Architecture at the Technion. The manager of the farm was Shlomo Dick. In 1917-1918 Merhavya hosted officers of the 304th Bavarian squadron. They were there to assist the Ottomans in World War I . They also filmed, for the first time, most of the Land of Israel from the air. The cooperative disbanded in 1918 due a host of problem: diseases, the Turks, who were a disease in and of themselves, economic and also social difficulties. After the group disbanded, the place served as an agricultural training center for various groups, including the a group of decommissioned members of the Jewish Battalion who fought with the allies in WWI. Morris and Golda Meir(son) joined that group. In 1924 Moshav Merhavia was established near the site. In 1929 Kibbutz Hashomer Hatzair from Merhavia took over the place and sees to the preservation of the original buildings to this very day. The site has "The Great Yard in Merhavia" which tells the story of the cooperative in text and photos.
