The paper documented the first-ever observation of a pulsar glitch, a sudden, spontaneous increase in the spin rate of a pulsar. The discovery proved that pulsars are dynamic and unstable, making them the ultimate natu…ral laboratories for testing quantum mechanics and general relativity in extreme environments. Until this paper, scientists believed pulsars, or neutron stars, were the most stable natural rotators in the universe, simple, rigidly spinning celestial bodies that slowed down at a perfectly steady, predictable rate. This paper proved that neutron stars undergo sudden rotational instabilities. The sudden jump in the spin frequency Radhakrishnan and Manchester's discovery in the Vela pulsar's rotational frequency provided the first empirical evidence that the inner core of a neutron star contains a superfluid. Glitches occur when the faster-spinning superfluid inside suddenly transfers rotational energy (angular momentum) outward to the slower, rigid outer crust. The glitch phenomenon gave astrophysicists their first observational tool to study the extreme physics occurring inside a neutron star, specifically the interaction between the star's rigid crust and its liquid/superfluid core. This single paper spawned the field of "pulsar glitch" studies, leading to decades of ongoing research into quantized vortices, starquakes, and quantum hydrodynamics.
