Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. London: Hudson's Bay Record Society, 1953. Thick 8vo. cvi + 401pp. Folding map. Royal blue gilt crested cloth. Fine. The best source for John Rae's writings on the search for Sir John Franklin. Rae was the first to discover relics of the Franklin Expedition and thus qualified for the 10,…000 pounds sterling reward. For partly ascertaining the fate of the Franklin party, he eventually received 8,000 pounds. John Rae, originally from the Orkney Islands, and a long-time employee of the HBC, was one of the few explorers who ate, travelled and lived like the Eskimos. Excellent historical introduction, accompanied by Rae's letters written from the Arctic.

Navy blue cloth hardcover binding with gold lettering on spine. Spine faded. Pages cut by hand, with a few tears. One of the publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society after its brea…k with the Champlain Society who published the Society's first twelve volumes (1938-1949). The Society was formed in order to organize and disseminate the Hudson Bay Company's extensive records going back to 1670. The society disbanded in 1983 with Rupert's Island Record Society taking over publishing responsibilities for HBC. Dr. John Rae (1813-1893)was a Scottish physician and explorer who surveyed parts of Northern Canada, including the Northwest Passage, the Arctic coast near Victoria Island, and the Gulf of Boothia near Hudson's Bay.
