About The Book: This book comprises 32 captivating folktales from the Khasi people, an ethnic group residing in Meghalaya, India, and certain regions of Assam and Bangladesh. Within these tales, a wide range of themes is explored, including the origins of natural phenomena like eclipses and lightning, legends like Mount Sophet Bneng, and the enchanting account of how the peacock acquired its splendid feathers. These narratives also delve into cultural elements, such as the goddess who coexisted with humans, the creation of the Earth, and the Khasi Orpheus, U Raitong. Stories like 'The Lost Book' and 'The Leap of Ka Likai' provide a profound glimpse into Khasi folklore and heritage. About The Author: Madam Rafy was a notable social reformer during her era. An illustrative example from her work involves the mention of the practice of Sati, where widows were burned on their husbands' funeral pyres, in a folk tale. This tale connects Mahadei's profound devotion to her lover with the inception of the Sati practice in India. Madam Rafy's work reflects her active involvement in social reform campaigns, which were inspired by the ongoing debates and strong condemnations of Sati in various parts of India during the 19th century. Her advocacy played a crucial role in challenging and reshaping traditional customs for the betterment of society.
