Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The top page edge has dust staining. However the impact on the actual pages is little to none, some have a few tan specks just peeking over their top edge. The middle and bottom page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and endpapers are a maroon color. They're in very nice condition. The pages in the book appear to be in excellent shape. I'm scrolling through without finding any instances of soiling. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. There are no attachments, no bookplates, there is no writing of any kind, no names, etc. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It has some scuffing at both spine ends, a few teeny tiny tears there as well. As you can see there is some scuffing in other places as well, also there are several thin edge tears. The light blue on the rear cover has some fading/discoloration. The flaps are in pretty solid condition. The front one has one small tan spot. The rear one has four or five of the same. The top corner of the front flap is clipped, but the price is present at the bottom corner which is not clipped. The appearance of the jacket will be improved by the fitting of a protective cover which will occur after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'In placing melodrama in the dramatic and theatrical tradition, the author reaches a conclusion that has not previously been made explicit: Behind the organized pandemonium of the typical performance, he finds melodrama a dynamic new way of telling a story on the stage, one which provides new scope and dimension and opens the way to a richer and more various art of the theatre-- in the face of the genre's modest pretensions in its own right. The movies are deeply in melodrama's debt, and total theatre uses the modes of melodrama and its apparatus-- however drastically the values are transposed. The bullwhip of Simon Legree and Charlotte Corday's hank of hair are ultimately the same kind of dramaturgic instrument, producing the same kind of audience effect.'.
