Though extremely popular in the Middle Ages, these texts were long disregarded by scholars due to their historical unreliability and lack of originality. Now, however, they are increasingly appreciated for the insights they provide into Byzantine ideology and the complex interaction of reading and writing in Byzantium. They are undoubtedly an important vehicle of Byzantine ideology and the reassessment of their literariness is increasingly attracting attention by scholars working in the area of Byzantine historical writing. The present volume offers the editio princeps of a 10th-century anonymous short chronicle (Kurzchronik) which covers the period from Adam up to 976. The text draws mainly from the interpolated version of George the Monk s chronicle which belongs to the circle of the Logothetes chronicle , and is preserved in two 15th-century manuscripts, Vat. Pal. gr. 369 and Vind. phil. gr. 333 (the latter, the only one to transmit the beginning of the chronicle, is newly discovered). The critical edition, complete with Prolegomena and Indexes, is accompanied by a German translation. The introduction includes a discussion of the relationship of the Chronica to the Synopsis chronike of Theodoros Skutariotes (13th century), and the Chronica is shown to be a preliminary by Theodoros to the Synopsis chronike.; In der vorliegenden Ausgabe wird die im Kodex Vaticanus gr. 1889 (13. Jh.) anonym überlieferte Weltchronik mit dem Titel Chronica, die in gedrängter Form über die Ereignisse von Adam bis zum Tod des byzantnischen Kaisers Alexios I. Komnenos (Reg. 1081 - 1118) berichtet, erstmals kritisch ediert. In der Einleitung wird u. a. ihr Verhältnis zur Synopsis chronike des Theodoros Skutariotes (13. Jh.) diskutiert und die Chronica als Vorarbeit des Theodoros (Autograph) zur Synopsis chronike ausgewiesen.
