"Eliza Sophia Pigot, daughter of an 1820 Settler leader, spent her childhood in comfortable circumstances in England. After her family immigrated she shared the experiences of a pioneer community, brought unsuspectingly to South Africa to form a barrier between advancing African tribes and long-established districts in the Western Cape. In 1824 she married Donald Moodie, one of three talented brothers from Orkney; she bore him fourteen children, and his career took them successively to the Kowie, Graham's Town, Graaff Reinet, Cape Town and Natal. The Journal in which Sophia Pigot records her voyage to the Cape, and the first phase of the Settlement in Albany, though recorded by scholars, has not been published before. Other diaries which she kept have been discovered recently, and these, with family letters and personal memoranda, constitute a record of an eventful life, and a character study of a dynamic, humorous and courageous woman.".…
