Die Historikerin Annelie Ramsbrock erzählt, wie der westdeutsche Staat nach 1945 das Dilemma zu lösen versuchte: Das Gefängnis sollte künftig nicht nur Strafe sein. Es sollte die Straftäter resozialisieren. Wie in einem Labor versuchte man, die Ideale der sich demokratisierenden Bundesrepublik auch im Gefängnis zu vermitteln. Der Strafvollzug sollte liberalisiert werden, mit Arbeit und Ausbildung, Kunstaktionen und Sportveranstaltungen, Gruppentherapien und Wohngemeinschaften. Das Leben in Freiheit so weit wie möglich zu imitieren gelang aber nicht. Und so verläuft die Geschichte des Gefängnisses und des reformierten Strafvollzugs zwar parallel mit der Geschichte der Demokratisierung nach 1945 bis in die 1980er Jahre - und ist dennoch eine andere. Annelie Ramsbrock beschreibt diese Gesellschaft aus der Nahsicht und fragt am Ende, warum eine Resozialisierung im Sozialversuch Gefängnis nicht gelingen kann. 416 pp. Deutsch.

Annelie Ramsbrock schreibt eine Geschichte der künstlich gestalteten Schönheit vom Ende der Aufklärung bis zum Beginn des Nationalsozialismus. Dabei verdeutlicht sie, dass die Ausbildung von Schönheitsidealen immer grundlegenden gesellschaftlichen Ordnungsmustern unterlag. Zum einen zeigt sich in Bereichen wie der Schönheitschirurgie oder der Herstellung von Kosmetika die Entwicklung des naturwissenschaftlichen Wissens. Zum anderen boten korrigierte Körper eine Projektionsfläche für soziale Ordnungsvorstellungen.
