Engraved early American literary society diploma issued by the Franklin Literary Society of Jefferson College, dated 1834. The certificate features elaborate engraved calligraphy with the title "Franklina Societas Literaria Collegii Jeffersoniensis" surrounding a finely detailed central vignette depicting a classical garden scene with students gathered near architectural ruins and a temple-like structure in the distance. The document was engraved by J. Warr of Philadelphia, a known engraver of academic diplomas and certificates during the early nineteenth century. Document measures ~11 in. x 13.5 in. In Very Good condition with mild age toning and mild creasing throughout. Fold to lower right corner. Original ribbon intact; original paper seal intact (with a few folds). Shelved at Rockville Room J (MW Shelf). The Franklin Literary Society was one of the principal student organizations at Jefferson College, devoted to debate, rhetoric, and classical scholarship. Such societies were central to collegiate life in the early United States and played a major role in developing the public speaking and political leadership skills of students in the antebellum period. 1410201.
