Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Illustrated by Randolph Adler (illustratore). Numbered Edition. Covers have light soil overall and rubbing to all extremities. Small black mark to leather of the back. Joints have a 1 1/2", thin crack at both sides the tail, but overall, the joints are sound. Very faint offsetting to pages opposite of plates. ; Three ribald tales of marital infidelity that are part of, but typically expurgated from, the complete Canterbury Tales. As in the rest of the Tales, these were told to the protagonist 'Pilgrim' by his fellow traveling pilgrims as they rested on their way to the shrine of St. Thomas a Beckett at Canterbury. In these three, the Merchant, the Miller, and the Reeve each have a wife not wholly committed to the relationship, and indiscreet dalliance ensues, not to mention "burning with Venus' fire." Each tale begins with Chaucer's literal verse description of the character, followed by a prose translation of the Tale for readers not fluent in 14th Century Middle English. Prefatory Observations by translator and editor Willis L. Parker provides background for how these three fit into The Canterbury Tales. This is copy 9 of a limited edition of 1000 "Privately printed for subscribers." Copyright by (Edna B. Meyers) Williams, (David) Belasco, & (Joseph) Meyers. Although the imprint is unstated, this book would have been issued by their Illustrated Editions Company using the interior design, typography, and binding typical of their previous Three Sirens Press editions. Sold to a subscription list instead of the normal distribution channels, as censorship was serious business in 1932 despite these tales being only mildly ribald. Including the frontispiece, the tales are illustrated by 12 woodcut plates initialed with the conjoined "RA" and in the characteristic style of Randolph Adler. One or two plates are mildly suggestive. Printed on cream, mould made paper trimmed at the head edge, only. Brown top stain. In quarter Morocco with textured brown paper over boards. Internally clean. Uncommon. About Very Good. ; Woodcuts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 136 pages.
