Economic and Social Development Initiatives in the Era of Globalization. 4. Globalization, Inclusive Development and Socio-Economic Inequalities. 5. Social Aspects of Inclusive Development: Challenges Ahead. The concept of development, by and large, has remained illusory. To understand it, one needs to look at it from economic, political, psychological, cultural, sociological and environmental perspectives. Thus, various theoretical perspectives on development have got evolved as no single perspective could provide its satisfactory understanding or explanation. A large proportion of the population, especially in the developing nations, are vulnerable to marginalization and exclusion. They are at the receiving end and are discriminated, exploited and oppressed. In order to bring this marginalized population in the mainstream, the idea of inclusive development was put forth by the civil society. Government has also consistently taken up various affirmative measures for their empowerment. However, inclusive development cannot be achieved in a linear fashion of progress but its journey is mostly uneven for realizing social change. An attempt has been made in this study to analyse and describe the dynamics involved in its realization as it has to encounter a number of social challenges such as globalization and inequalities of various types and social stratification inherent in our social structure. The state also has the responsibility of tackling these challenges to make inclusive development a reality, failing which; it will remain only a fad. Offering insights into the politics of inclusive development, the book will equally interest policymakers and development practitioners. (jacket).

Planet Earth is unique in its characteristic in view of the fact that it has provided life on it to micro-organisms, plants and animals, including man. Man through his understanding and reasoning capabilities has succeeded in harnessing his environment. However, man as a species himself is also responsible for environmental degradation and deterioration by overutilizing the resources on this planet because of his ingenuity and greed. This has caused an imbalance in the environment and has made our ecology fragile. Therefore, we need to restore and protect our planet resources to provide an ecological balance for environmental sustainability. In the context of a developing nation like ours, this paradigm of development has posed greater challenges as we do not have adequate technologies to take care of environmental problems. Besides, we are also encountering a major problem of population explosion which has made us vulnerable to greater health risks and increasing population pangs. For sustainable development, we need not only a healthy ecology but we also require to take into account the health risks and population problems. The present book discusses issues related to different dimensions of environment, health and population to suggest a viable alternative for sustainable development based on participatory approach and having roots in our cultural ethos.

Five years down the line, Demonetization , a Landmark event of economic history of India, has attracted a wide range of viewpoints from many, including noted economists. The views expressed in the early days were mainly based on the extrapolation of various economic indicators, but now the data and results on the ground are available to give somewhat clearer results of demonetization initiative. As can be inferred from various reports, including RBI annual reports, economic surveys from government of India, and statistics from national and global agencies, after an initial short-term jerk to economic activities on expected lines, the intended long-term objectives are now being realizes, barring one or two fronts where achievement has been partial, but in now has started moving forward with somewhat desirable pace and satisfactory outcome., After five years, it has become desirable, and even possible, to analyse socio-economic impacts of this momentous step on India's economy. The present book " Demonetization and Indian Economy : 5 Years of Hiccups and Achievements" catalogues developments which can broadly be viewed as short-term and medium-term effects of demonetization of the Indian Currency during last five years.
