Aggiungi al carrelloBurgundy quarter morocco and cloth, vellum corner tips, top edge gilt, folio, 36 cm xxii, 16 pp, [14] pp of facs. The Duke of Devonshire's preface states "The choice of subject, an unpublished manuscript about the Virginia Company and its struggles to establish the first permanent English settlement in North America, has more to do with my family, who were closely involved with the Company, than with the Chatsworth library and the collecting of books as such. The intricate story it reveals. of the bitter factional strife and intrigue that beset the Virginia company after its failure to reward investors as they had been led to expect, belies the manuscript's obscure appearance and slightly imperfect state. It brings into sharp focus, moreover, an incident from my family's past I had previously failed to take very seriously, and regarded simply as a case of hot temper or pride rather than, as it now appears, material self-interest. In July 1623 William, Lord Cavendish, later second earl of Devonshire, a zealous supporter of the faction Nicholas Ferrar seeks to promote in this pamphlet, quarrelled so violently with the earl of Warwick, who was in the opposite camp, that both men decided to cross the Channel to fight a duel. Perhaps fortunately for them, the King got wind of their intention and Cavendish was caught and detained at Shoreham, while Warwick, disguised as a merchant, escaped to the Netherlands, only to be discovered soon after at Ghent. The affair, apparently, then blew over, but it is clear that the struggle for control of the Virginia Company might easily, in this instance, have taken a more deadly turn". Fine. Formerly Edward Brudenell's copy (his name printed in red in the List of Members).
