Paperback. Condizione: Good. Female initiation rites appear to be at odds with westernized urban society in present-day Zambia. This book offers an interpretation of the relevance of female initiation rites in an urban setting among today's `modern' Christian women. Female initiation rites are linked to gender relations. In this book changes in gender relations during the last few centuries and decades are examined on a socio-economic, religious and political level. Despite these changes, initiation rites remain of remarkable significance to women. In this book, the author gives an in-dept description of these initiation rites and analyzes their meaning and relevance for Zambian women at present. Despite new types of initiation rites and wedding ceremonies, such as Christian weddings and kitchen parties, based on Christian ideas and ideas of modernity, traditional initiation rites remain the central institution that construe female Zambian identity. Initiation rites emphasize female fertility, but also the importance of inter-human relationships, necessary for procreation, as well as relationships with the ancestral spirits, and women's central religious roles. Spine free of vertical creases. -- This legal-anthropological study offers a fine-grained analysis of how social control is maintained among the Iglulingmiut Inuit of the Canadian Eastern Arctic in the absence of formal state-based legal institutions. Moving beyond a static description of rules, the author focuses on the dynamic process of conflict management and the negotiation of norms in everyday life. The work meticulously documents the subtle yet powerful mechanisms used to handle deviance, including gossip, ridicule, shaming, and social avoidance. Central to the analysis is the role of the ihumataq (a respected leader or person with good judgment), whose authority is earned and situational rather than formally appointed. Through detailed case studies, the book demonstrates how the community navigates tensions between individual autonomy and collective cohesion, providing a profound ethnographic account of an acephalous legal system in action. -- "Alcohol, drug and solvent abuse, suicide and criminal behaviour are some of the serious social problems that at present plague the Inuit ('Eskimos') of northern Canada. The social problems of one group of Inuit, the 'Iglulingmiut' of the Canadian Eastern Arctic are examined in this book. In order to understand the nature and sociogenetical background of their problems, an extensive historical and legal-anthropological analysis is made of Iglulingmiut contacts with the outside world. Although the focus is on changes in the values, norms and behaviour pertaining to order and control and to the role played by Canadian legal agencies in these changes, the use of a new 'figurational' perspective also provides the reader of this study with a thorough and encompassing analysis of the process of social, economical, political, religious and mental changes that evolved in Iglulingmiut social life during the last century and a half.".…
