These stories were first anonymously published in German in 1785 by Rudolf Erich Raspe, before being translated, expanded, and popularised in English by Gottfried August Bürger and subsequent editors.Illustrated with twenty-three engraved plates, four folding, and a frontispiece. Collated, this copy appears to lack three plates: The Baron and the Coach-horse, The Seaman and Sea-gull, and The Baron and Whale, as called for in the list of plates.
