The halfway house is no panacea for all those too psychologically troubled to live in ordinary society. There is no aim here to present it as such. But because the halfway house movement is recent, because it took its impetus from diverse sources, and because halfway houses have as yet no standardized formatfor personnel, for social structure, for functions and operating proceduresthey can serve as field laboratories for testing different approaches. The tests themselves are crude. But in the process of examination we can perhaps come upon some ideas which freshen our vision, extend our scope, and help us on the way toward a language and a model based on fewer bad assumptions. Even a small gain in understanding can reverberate in the mitigation of suffering. And that perhaps is enough for right now. At the bottom of Pandora's box was Hope.
