Hardcover. Condizione: New. AN EXTREMELY TOPICAL BOOKAND THE FIRST OF ITS KINDON DELIMITATION, WHICH IS TO BE CARRIED OUT AFTER THE 2026 CENSUS. The popular narrative around delimitation is that south India controlled its population growth through effective family planning, while the north did not. Therefore, the argument goes, delimitationexpected to take place after the Census is conducted in 2026would penalise the south for performing well. In this compelling and data-driven analysis, Ravi K. Mishra, a scholar of modern Indian history and Joint Director of the Prime Ministers Museum and Library, questions this belief. Drawing on 150 years of comprehensive data from decennial censuses, district gazetteers, boundary commission reports and state reorganisation legislations, Mishra reveals that all regions of India have experienced phases of peak population growth, though at different times. He argues that there is little causal connection between family planning and population control in India: when family planning assumed importance in the 1960s under the flawed Western notion of 'population explosion', most southern states had already grown rapidly for ninety years, and almost completed their demographic transition, leading to a gradual decline in growth thereafter. Meanwhile, trailing the south by decades, the north had only then entered the peak growth phase, and the north and west are currently underrepresented, disrupting the 'one person, one vote, one value' principle. Tackling myths about demography and delimitation head-on, Demography, Representation, Delimitation is an essential read on a complex and widely misunderstood subject. …

Hardcover. Condizione: New. The present volume is the sixth in a series of ten volumes of the Selected Works of C. Rajagopalachari, being published in association with the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. This volume brings out Rajaji's active engagement with electoral arrangements and campaigns in the south. Rajaji led the Congress to an overwhelming victory in 1937, and was subsequently chosen as leader of the newly elected Congress contingent. He argued in favour of autonomy for the provincial government and carried forward various measures as Premier of Madras: propagation of the Hindustani language and the use of khadi; the prohibition of alcohol; temple-entry for the Untouchables; and his response to the demand for a separate Andhra province. Vol. VI also carries abstracts of the budgets that Rajaji presented, which highlight his remarkable expertise, even in financial matters. It is a collector's edition that will be a useful tool of reference on the life of Rajaji, and narrates a very important phase in the history of India's struggle for freedom.…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. The present volume is the ninth in a series of ten volumes of the Selected Works of C. Rajagopalachari, being published in association with the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. This volume covers the period from January 1949 and December 1951. In his roles as the firstand subsequently the lastIndian Governor-General, a cabinet minister without portfolio, and finally as the Minister of Home Affairs, he played a key role in India's transition to a sovereign Republic. One of Rajaji's main concerns was establishing relationships of trust between India and its immediate neighbours, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan. Rajaji advised the provisional government on matters that ranged from municipal administration, industry, journalism, agriculture, to education and employment, science and religion, the establishment of central institutions, and the allocation of central funds. We also have tributes paid by him to great personalities such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Annie Besant, Kasturba Gandhi, Thakkar Bapa, and Sarojini Naidu. Rajaji's views on capital punishment in the wake of the Mahatma's assassination, his call to cultivate millets to meet nutritional deficiency, his perspective on the medium of instruction in educational institutions and on vocational education, and his disapproval of the nuclear arms race are also carefully recorded.…

The volume also covers subjects such as the deep impact of the tragic loss of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajaji's vision for independent India, his correspondence with Lord Mountbatten, and negotiations with the Nizam of Hyderabad. This volume covers a decisive phase of Rajaji's political journey, detailing his difference with the Indian National Congress on the timing of the Quit India movement as well as on the demand for Pakistan, which resulted in his resignation from the party in 1942, and his subsequent return in 1945. It also discusses his work on matters of national importance, notable among which was the 'Rajaji/C.R. Formula', which formed the basis of the Gandhi-Jinnah talks in 1944. …

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. The present volume is the fifth in a series of ten volumes of the Selected Works of C. Rajagopalachari being published in association with Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. This volume traces Rajaji's political journey from his release from imprisonment in 1931 to his eventual inability to take up the Presidentship of the Indian National Congress in 1935, as he recovered from ill-health following a series of arrests. By this time, the civil disobedience had been called off and the Congress was looking towards representation in legislatures. Rajaji's extensive campaigns in Madras helped the national party to secure a resounding victory in the Central Legislative Assembly elections. The letters, articles, statements, speeches and interviews that comprise this volume throw further light on the finer details of Rajaji's convictions and his political career. The Poona Pact and temple entry satyagraha are given particular emphasis, reinforcing his concern with and investment in the upliftment of untouchables. Resolute in his involvement with civil resistance, Rajaji continued to engage with colonial authorities during the Swadeshi and boycott movement. Similarly, prohibition of consumption of all sorts of alcoholic substances and Hindi prachar constituted a significant part of Rajaji's discourse and activism during the period under discussion. The volume concludes with his reflections on the Gandhian era and on Congress' work towards attaining Swaraj. This volume is a collector's edition that will be a useful tool of reference on the life of Rajaji. It narrates a very important phase in the history of India's struggle for freedom, making it a reference for scholars, researchers, academics, and lay readers studying the Indian national movement.
