[From the introduction] "In the Americas, ancient methods of weaving endure in a mere handful of places. Rarer still are those pockets where a great textile tradition still flourishes. Only in the Andes of South America and the Highlands of Guatemala do large numbers of women still practice the ancient art of hand weaving. It is the aim of this catalog and exhibit to explore the traditional textile arts of the Highlands of Guatemala. The second half of the 20th century has brought profound and rapid changes to this region. As a result, the art of weaving, with at least 3000 years of history behind it, may have less than a century to live. In spite of recent changes, many of the patterns of Maya life endure in the western Highlands of Guatemala as they have for more than three millennia. Men till the soil, planting corn and beans on the sides of volcanic hills. People travel to regional marketplaces to trade produce, to visit with acquaintances, and to buy specialty items not produced in their own villages. Women raise children, grind corn on coarse grinding stones, and weave clothing on simple backstrap looms. Waving provides both the fabric of daily life and the fabric of cultural continuity and the Maya communities of the Highlands. It is a link with the mythic past, when the goddess Ix-chel wove garments on her celestial loom. It is also a link with the pre-Hispanic past, when Maya rulers in the great cities of the northern jungles wore their finely woven garments that we see depicted in stone sculptures dating from 600 to 900 AD.
