Sketches of Old Rowan, stories by George Raynor with large-format ink sketches by noted North Carolina regional artist Aubrey Atkinson. Published in Salisbury, North Carolina, by the Salisbury Branch of the American Association of University Women. An attractive and uncommon illustrated history of Rowan County, North Carolina, combining Raynor's historical accounts with Atkinson's detailed architectural and landscape drawings of historic homes, churches, mills, schools, public buildings, and other Rowan County landmarks. This third edition was issued in 2,000 copies in October 1971. The book's own publication statement records that the first edition of 1,000 copies, published November 2, 1960, sold out within a month; a second edition of another 1,000 copies followed in September 1963 and also sold out. The 1971 third edition incorporated several revisions and additions to the earlier editions. Atkinson's striking full-page ink illustrations are a particular highlight. Subjects include historic Rowan County architecture and landmarks such as Lower Stone Church, Gold Hill Mill, Hambley-Wallace Home, Rowan Museum, the Law Office, and other Salisbury and Rowan County sites.
