"Dreaming about being a writer, 18-year-old Ben sold a story to a Western pulp magazine. He dropped out of college to support his family. He was self-educated. And then he was drafted, and sent to the Philippines. Ben served as a Sergeant in the U. S. Army from 1945 to 1946. Returning home, Ben went to work, married a Southern belle named Douglas Thornton Taylor from Raleigh in 1950, lived in Charlotte and in Sumter in South Carolina , and then made Raleigh his home in 1959. Ben and his wife had three sons, Joel, Michael and John. Ben held various jobs until 1961, when he was working for a steel company. He had submitted a manuscript to Beacon Books, and an offer for more came just as he was laid off at the steel company. He became a full-time writer for the rest of his life. Ben wrote every day, every night. "I tried to write 5000 words or more everyday, scrupulous in maintaining authenticity", Ben said. His son Joel later recalled, "My Mom learned to go to sleep to the sound of a typewriter". " (from Lynn Munroe website).

NO Date = Circa 1930; 128 pages; (220 grams); "GEORGE FIELDING was a young Berkshire farmer whose land was so poor that he and his brother William could not make a decent living out of it. George was in love with his cousin, Susan Merton, and she with him, but her father declared that he should not have her until he had made a thousand pounds. Torn Robinson was a London thief who came to lodge at George's farm and made himself, for his own purposes, very popular in the neighbourhood, for he was a jolly, good-hearted fellow. About the time when George was wondering how to make the thousand pounds the police officers came to the farm, arrested Robinson. and carried him off to jail. This event helped George to decide to accept the offer of the Honourable Frank Winchester (whose life he had saved) to take him out to Australia as his helper on a stock farm. He promised Susan to come back as soon as possible with his thousand pounds, committed her to the care of his brother Will, who gave him his dog Carlo as a parting gift, and set out for the .Antipodes. John Meadows, a wealthy land and property owner of the place, also loved Susan and determined to win her hand in George's absence. The effect of his plots to that end will become apparent as we follow George's career in Australia. Isaac Levi, a retired Jewish merchant, was another of George's neighbours whom Meadows had turned out of his house to serve his own ends, and who then went to Australia, where he worked steadily in George's interests, for he had received many kindnesses from the young farmer and his sweetheart." >> Spine damage & partial seperation, thus FA/G Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
